Description
Role
*Ringfenced to LJMU students studying with background in Biology, in particular Zoology or Wildlife Conservation ONLY*
The School of Biological and Environmental Sciences conducts annual insect biodiversity surveys in summer, using pan trapping. We have been setting up urban Gardens several years ago on Byrom Street campus, and collect annual flying insect samples within these and in close by mowed areas.
This long-term effort allows us to monitor long-term changes in biodiversity and abundance, as well as investigating general differences in preference for specific habitat areas and pan trap colours in different insects.
Duties and responsibilities
- The student will be preparing and setting up traps across the Urban Gardens on Byrom Street Campus, and collecting samples 24 hrs later.
- As much as possible, the student will identify captured insects and contribute to the collation of a multi-year datasheet on monitoring insect biodiversity.
Skills and experience
- Willingness to set up pan traps across the wildlife gardens and control areas.
- Knowledge on insect taxonomy, appropriate laboratory conduct and use of basic equipment will be necessary.
- Diligence with data recording and entry is of high importance.
- Ideal conditions would mean the student works on 2 to 3 consecutive days each week.
- Suitable for students with background in Biology, in particular Zoology or Wildlife Conservation. However, interest in ecology in general, ideally in insect biodiversity would be an advantage.
- Ability to work systematically;
- reliable note taking will be required.
- Knowledge on insect taxonomy is preferred, appropriate laboratory conduct and use of basic equipment expected.
