Duties and responsibilities

Day Role:

During the day, and in the evening, you’ll be responsible for leading an assigned group of students – they’ll be your flat group, and will:

  • Plan an icebreaker session with your co-Team Leader. We recommend planning around three activities (15-20 minutes per activity), and having a back-up. The aim is to make your group feel comfortable, learn each other’s names, and have fun. You’ll need to make sure every student is included, and that it can be safely delivered in a classroom. You’ll have the chance to prepare these with your fellow Team Leaders at the Training Day.
  • Support students in an industry-led group project.
  • Encourage students to actively participate in sessions.
  • Help create a positive working environment.
  • Facilitate skills sessions like team-building and reflective activities.
  • Help make sure students follow the Student Code of Conduct.
  • Talk about your experiences of applying to university, student life and your career aspirations.

You’ll also need to:

  • Knock on each student’s door in your flat each morning, and make sure they’re up and ready for breakfast.
  • During breaks and student free-time, work with all the Team Leaders to supervise the students.
  • Be a positive role model, lead by example, and follow the Staff Code of Conduct
  • Report any incidents, including with students and other staff, to a Sutton Trust staff member at the appropriate time.
  • Support the Sutton Trust with other general duties and tasks, and approach these with enthusiasm and flexibility.
  • Keep your phone on in case we need to get in touch with you, but keep its use to an absolute minimum.

Overnight Team Member:

To ensure the safety of students during the evening and overnight, your responsibilities will include:

  • Checking students into accommodation after social activities have ended
  • Ensuring students don’t leave the accommodation once they have checked in
  • Moving students from the communal areas like kitchen, landings, and corridors into their rooms by 11pm each night
  • Regularly carrying out regular patrols/checks of the accommodation
  • If a student has a concern, be the first point of contact
  • Help to make sure students follow the Student Code of Conduct
  • Assessing situations and escalating to the Sutton Trust or the Warwick Security Team as needed
  • Being a positive role model and leading by example
  • Following the Safeguarding Code of Conduct
  • During the day you don’t have any responsibilities

This role involves being awake and on duty throughout the night, from dinner time, approx. 6.45pm to the end of the shift at about 7.30am. You’ll mostly be stationed in the foyer at the entrance of the accommodation block, except for breaks and patrols. Outside of your specific duties such as checking-in students, patrols of the accommodation and supporting any students with questions or concerns, you are free to get on with studying, reading, etc. during the shift whilst staying at your post and ensuring that you are alert and available to respond to any issues or tasks. During the daytime you will not have any specific duties and can use this time to sleep and prepare for the night shift.
