Description
Role
- To provide technical support on research and commercial projects within the Automation Systems Group at WMG, University of Warwick. The role involves supporting the design, build, installation, testing, and evaluation of automation systems and equipment used in research, teaching, and industry collaboration projects.
Duties and responsibilities
Support day-to-day operation of laboratory and workshop facilities:
- Assist with the setup, execution, and teardown of engineering tests and experimental activities
- Support internal and external researchers, engineers, academics, and students with project activities
- Order, manage, and control consumables, spares, and laboratory supplies
- Support delivery, handling, storage, and change-over of gas cylinders and bottles
- Participate in laboratory inductions, training activities, and facility tours, as required, including supporting and delivering these sessions where appropriate.
- Actively contribute as a collaborative member of the Technical Services team, providing mentorship, guidance and technical support to colleagues, including Apprentices and T-Level students. Share knowledge, best practice, and technical expertise to support the development of less experienced team members and promote a positive and inclusive team environment.
- Actively contribute to the Technician Commitment by engaging in development activities, events, and action plans. Collaborate with colleagues and line managers to identify training needs and development opportunities, sharing knowledge and skills across teams to support effective day-to-day operations and continuity.
Operate, maintain and fault-find technical equipment and test systems:
- Operate, monitor, and maintain laboratory and workshop equipment in accordance with SOPs
- Assist contractors and coordinate service providers during equipment installation, servicing, and maintenance works.
- Carry out first-line fault finding activities.
Ensure compliance with health & safety and safe systems of work:
- Actively promote a strong health and safety culture
- Maintain high standards of health, safety, and housekeeping at all times
- Work safely with mechanical systems, electrical equipment, chemicals, and gases
- Comply with all laboratory, workshop, chemical, electrical, and mechanical safety procedures
- Use appropriate PPE and challenge unsafe practices where identified
- Ensure work is undertaken in compliance with relevant legislation, standards, and local procedures
Support installation and modification of rigs and equipment:
- Support equipment installation, relocation, and reconfiguration
- Support fabrication, modification, and assembly of rigs, fixtures, and test setups
Maintain documentation and technical records:
- Contribute to the preparation, review, and implementation of Risk Assessments (RA), SSOWs, and SOPs
- Maintain accurate technical records, logs, and documentation
Deliver specialist technical activities in Automation Systems:
- Support the design, build, installation and commissioning of bespoke engineering systems and equipment, contributing to technical and project objectives.
- Carry out hands-on engineering tasks such as wiring, mechanical assembly, operation of machinery, testing and system integration across a range of equipment and technologies.
- Assist in the selection of components, materials and manufacturing methods, contributing practical insight to support project delivery and development activities.
- Work collaboratively to troubleshoot, operate and maintain equipment, and optimise system performance, supporting continuous improvement of systems and processes.
Skills and experience
- Successfully completed an Engineering Apprenticeship with a relevant Level 4 engineering qualification, or a Level 3 engineering qualification supported by significant relevant engineering experience demonstrating equivalent competence.
- Experience in a related engineering discipline/environment.
- A high level of practical, hands-on experience operating and supporting technical equipment.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to follow technical drawings, procedures, and documentation.
- Conversant in computer software such as Microsoft Office.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to enable professional interaction with academics, interns, external partners and visitors.
- High degree of flexibility to respond to changing academic and industry-led research needs.
- Excellent team working skills and experience working with multiple project stakeholders.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and respond flexibly to changing priorities.
- High level of health and safety awareness, including ability to create and maintain risk assessments and safe systems of work.
- Flexible approach and willingness to support activities outside of core expertise.
- Some experience or exposure to the design, build, installation or operation of machinery, equipment or engineering systems (automation experience not essential).
- Practical, hands-on experience in areas such as electrical wiring, fault finding, mechanical assembly, or system integration.
- Ability to work independently on tasks, with a willingness to develop technical knowledge in areas such as system design, component selection and safe operation.
Desirable:
- Full UK Driving License
