Description

Role
The University of Leicester is seeking a friendly, efficient and proactive Sports Assistant/Lifeguard to join the Sport & Active Life team on a casual basis. This role is based at the Danielle Brown Sports Centre, with the potential for cross-site working, although a base site will be allocated if successful.

The post is available from June 2026 for a period of 12 months, with the potential for further extension.

Working as part of a small and supportive team, the postholder will contribute to the safe and effective operation of the Sports Centre and its associated wet-side facilities. The role primarily involves lifeguarding duties and requires a strong commitment to customer service, safety and professionalism within a busy university environment.

Duties and responsibilities
The Sports Assistant Lifeguard will be responsible for providing lifeguard supervision for all swimming pool users and wet-side facilities at the Danielle Brown Sports Centre. This includes acting as a first responder to any swimming pool, spa pool, sauna or steam room emergency and ensuring that all users receive a safe and welcoming experience. The postholder will also provide information to members and deliver a consistently high standard of customer service.

The role involves implementing the established operational Health and Safety regime on a day-to-day basis, including carrying out pool and spa water tests, recording water and air temperatures every two hours while on poolside, and reporting any broken or faulty equipment. Additional responsibilities include opening and securing facilities, monitoring and recording bather loads, completing cleaning duties, selling and administering memberships, taking court fees, managing bookings through the dedicated online booking system and completing general administrative tasks.

Skills and experience

Applicants must hold a valid National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ), as this is an essential requirement for the role, and candidates without a current qualification will not be considered. The successful applicant will have experience of working in a customer service environment and will be confident engaging with a wide range of facility users in a professional and approachable manner.

The role requires good IT skills, including the ability to use Microsoft Office applications, and the postholder must be willing to undertake an enhanced DBS check. Reliability, attention to detail and the ability to work flexibly in line with the operational needs of the Sports Centre are essential.

Danielle Brown Sports Centre, University of Leicester (Potential for cross-site working, but a base site will be allocated to you if successful)
