This post is suitable for a person with a master’s degree in economics, Statistics, International Relations, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology or a related Social Science field with relevant methodological training.
Duties and responsibilities
The Research Assistant will develop:
Data Collection
- Conduct systematic searches to gather datasets, policy documents, reports, and statements produced by international organisations.
- Identify, extract and structure quantitative indicators relevant to peacebuilding, inclusion, institutional performance, or social cohesion.
- Retrieve and organise textual sources for subsequent text analysis.
Data Analysis
- Perform descriptive statistical analysis of project datasets (e.g., coding, tabulating, correlation/exploratory analysis).
- Conduct text analysis using quantitative or mixed method software (e.g., NVivo/MAXQDA text coding, frequency analysis, thematic clustering, sentiment measures if appropriate).
- Ensure data quality, documentation, and replicability.
Research Support
- Prepare structured summaries of evidence and findings.
- Assist with preparing figures, tables, and data visualisations.
- Contribute to drafting methodological notes for internal reports.
- Maintain confidentiality, secure data storage, and adhere to LJMU ethics and GDPR requirements.
Skills and experience
Essential Factors
Bachelor, Master's or PhD in
- Social Sciences
- Data Sciences
- International Relations
- Political Science
- Peace & Conflict Studies
- Economics
- Psychology or related field.
- Demonstrable quantitative research experience and knowledge of quantitative methods.
- Experience with quantitative text analysis and network analysis.
- Proficiency with quantitative software (R, Stata, or Python).
- Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and maintain accurate records.
- Ability to work on research reports, data visualisations, and data analysis research documents.
- Commitment to LJMUs' values and regulations, including the Diversity and Inclusion Policy.
Desirable Factors
- Knowledge of the Balkans, peacebuilding, and international organisations
- Experience with mixed methods approaches.
- Prior research assistant experience.
Management & Reporting
- The Research Assistant will report directly to the Principal Investigator.
- Weekly or bi‑weekly check‑ins will be arranged depending on workload.
- All work must comply with LJMU ethics, confidentiality, and data governance procedures.
