Role
We are seeking a Welcome & Induction Intern to support the design of a smoother, more engaging onboarding experience for new students. This role focuses on understanding and improving the student journey from offer-holder through to the first weeks on campus, ensuring that information, communications, and support are clear, timely, and student-centred.

 
The intern will work closely with Student Experience teams, student ambassadors, and support services to map current journeys, identify friction points, and co-design improvements with students. This internship offers valuable experience in service design, journey mapping, student engagement, and collaborative problem-solving within a higher education environment.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Map the current student journey from offer-holder through enrolment to the first weeks on campus.
  • Identify friction points in the onboarding experience, such as unclear communications, information overload, missed steps, or gaps in support.
  • Review onboarding communications (e.g. emails, guidance, digital content) for clarity, timing, and accessibility.
  • Gather feedback from a range of stakeholders, including:
  • New students
  • Student ambassadors
  • Professional services and support teams
  • Design and facilitate student engagement activities, such as workshops, focus groups, surveys, or informal consultations.
  • Co-design onboarding improvements with students, ensuring their voices and lived experiences shape recommendations.
  • Analyse qualitative feedback to identify themes, trends, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Produce clear summaries of findings and practical, student-centred recommendations.
  • Share insights with relevant teams in a clear and accessible format.

Skills and experience
Essential

  • Strong interest in student experience, service design, or educational engagement.
  • Good communication skills (written and verbal), with confidence engaging students and staff.
  • Ability to gather, organise, and interpret qualitative feedback.
  • Empathy and ability to see processes from a student perspective.
  • Good organisational and time-management skills.
  • Willingness to learn and work collaboratively.
Desirable
  • Studying a relevant subject (e.g. Education, Psychology, Sociology, Business, Marketing, Design, or related disciplines).
  • Awareness of student transition or onboarding challenges.
  • Experience supporting workshops, surveys, or engagement activities.
  • Interest in inclusive practice and widening participation.

Hybrid (Hendon campus)
