Description

Role

We are seeking a UX Intern to support the ongoing enhancement of the MDXApp, with a focus on improving the student digital experience. This role offers an excellent opportunity for a student interested in user experience (UX), digital design, technology, and student engagement to gain hands-on experience in applied UX research and service improvement within a higher education context.

The successful candidate will work closely with Digital and Student Services teams to evaluate, test, and improve the usability, accessibility, and effectiveness of the MDXApp. This internship will enable the intern to apply UX theory in practice, develop analytical and research skills, and contribute directly to improving how students interact with key university systems.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Conduct UX audits of the MDXApp, focusing on navigation, usability, accessibility, and performance.
  • Identify user pain points, “black holes” (areas where users drop off), and broken or incomplete user journeys.
  • Identify and document dead links, unclear navigation paths, or usability barriers.
  • Design and run student usability testing sessions, including task-based testing (e.g. “find your timetable” or “locate assessment deadlines”).
  • Collect and analyse qualitative and quantitative user feedback from students.
  • Analyse available user data (e.g. click paths, session flows, bounce rates) to identify trends and problem areas.
  • Benchmark the MDXApp against other university apps or digital platforms, identifying examples of good UX practice.
  • Produce clear UX findings and recommendations and present them to stakeholders in an accessible format.
  • Contribute to discussions about inclusive and accessible digital design based on student needs.

Skills and experience

  • Strong interest in user experience, digital design, or student digital services
  • Good communication skills (written and verbal), with the ability to explain insights clearly
  • Ability to carry out basic research activities, including gathering, analysing, and summarising data
  • Confidence working with peers and staff and engaging students in testing activities
  • Good organisational and time-management skills
  • Willingness to learn and engage with feedback

Desirable

  • Studying a relevant subject (e.g. UX, Digital Media, Computer Science, Psychology, Design, Marketing, or related disciplines)
  • Familiarity with UX concepts such as usability, accessibility, or user journeys
  • Experience using digital platforms, apps, or data analysis tools
  • Awareness of inclusive design or accessibility standards
