Role
This is a fantastic opportunity if you have an interest in retail, brand, or commercial strategy and want to make a real impact on the MDX student experience! You’ll take ownership of a genuine project – reviewing what merchandise MDX currently offers and helping shape what it looks like for 2026–27. You’ll develop transferable skills in research, data analysis, stakeholder engagement, and commercial thinking. Our ideal candidate is a curious, motivated student who wants to learn how commercial decisions are made in a university 

Duties and responsibilities

  • Conduct a review of the current MDX merchandise range, including sales data, product mix, pricing, and any existing student or staff feedback 

  • Research how comparable universities and student unions present and promote their merchandise offer 

  • Design and run a short student/staff survey or focus group to gather insight on preferences, buying behaviour, and demand for new products 

  • Analyse findings and produce a clear written report with data-led recommendations for the 2026–27 merchandise range 

  • Support the development of product briefs or concept ideas for potential new merchandise lines, considering sustainability and brand alignment 

  • Prepare and deliver a final presentation of findings and proposed direction to key stakeholders 

  • Attend all scheme activities including induction, regular check-ins with your supervisor, and mandatory Careers & Futures reflective learning sessions 

Skills and experience

Essential 

  • Currently enrolled as a Middlesex University student 

  • Interest in marketing, retail, brand, or commercial strategy 

  • Good written and verbal communication skills 

  • Ability to work independently, manage your time, and meet deadlines 

  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or equivalent 

Desirable 

  • Studying towards a degree in Business, Marketing, Fashion, Design, or a related field 

  • Familiarity with survey tools such as Microsoft Forms or Google Forms 

  • An interest in sustainability and ethical product sourcing
