Description
Role
To provide a high quality, friendly and professional customer focused front of house service in the Olympia building, ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of customers at all times. Additionally support the full-time sports team with various tasks related to the operation of sports facilities and services at Teesside University.
Duties and responsibilities
- To support the provision of an effective reception desk for users of the sport and gym facilities and sports services in the Olympia building dealing with bookings, gym membership, general enquiries, first aid and security/access control.
- Liaising with facility and service users in a friendly and professional manner.
- To act as first point of contact with respect to enquiries in the form of telephone calls, face to face contact and email.
- Greeting facility users and service users providing relevant information to their activity and directing them to appropriate areas or staff.
- Operation of the leisure management system, checking memberships, taking bookings, and checking set up for bookings.
- Accepting, recording, and processing casual payments for activities via the leisure management system in accordance with the University cash handling policies and procedures.
- To provide cover on sports activities as appropriate.
- To assist in the administration and promotion of gym and sports club memberships
- To ensure effective control of equipment and other related resources, maintaining high standards of cleanliness and repair.
- To ensure the timely and efficient setup and dismantling of sports equipment and facilities relating to sports facility bookings.
- To open and/or close facilities as required (shift dependent) along with campus security ensuring all operational procedures are followed.
- To be aware of Health and Safety procedures relating to Sport’s facilities and ensure that relevant reporting requirements are adhered to.
- Adhere to the University’s Health and Safety Policy and guidelines.

- To undertake any other reasonable duties that may be allocated from time to time commensurate with the grading of the post and the needs of the department.
Skills and experience
- Registered student at Teesside University during Academic Year 2026/2027 studying a minimum of 60 credits.
- First Aid Certificate or ability to obtain.
- Willing to undertake any training associated with the role.
- Ability to convey straightforward information in a clear and accurate manner both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to communicate information which needs careful explanation with tact and diplomacy, taking action to correct misunderstandings.
- Ability to relate and communicate well to a diverse range of staff and students.
- Ability to produce basic marketing materials.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment, supporting colleagues in need of additional help.
- Experience in dealing with internal and external customers, being responsive to requests and dealing with routine enquiries.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Cash Handling.
- Ability to complete tasks and prioritise work within a given framework.
- Experience of working in sport or leisure facility.
- Experience of using a leisure management booking system system.
