Description
Role
You will support the gym facility operation, providing safe supervision of all areas within the gym, and be responsible for safe and competent usage of all equipment by gym users.
Duties and responsibilities
- To supervise all users in The Gym.
- To support new members with an extended equipment induction if required.
- Liaising with facility users in a friendly and professional manner.
- To act as first point of contact with respect to enquiries regarding health and fitness.
- To advise on training and exercise techniques.
- Operation of the leisure management system, to check fitness class bookings and checking set up for fitness classes.
- To ensure the timely and efficient setup and dismantling of equipment/facilities for fitness classes.
- To ensure the security of the gym by supporting the senior sports assistant in closing on an evening in accordance with the departmental procedures.
- To exhibit a flexible approach to work, providing additional cover in case of sickness, leave or special events.
- To ensure all equipment and facilities are checked regularly and safe to use.
- To ensure the required standards of cleanliness and tidiness are always maintained following a daily cleaning rota with specific regard to weight and cardiovascular machines.
- To ensure that the environment is welcoming and safe from potential hazards and all literature and posters are presentable and kept up to date.
- To design and promote monthly gym challenges to help motivate and encourage members to become more active, creating a social gym community.
- To cover fitness classes in the event of class instructor sickness or leave.
- Adhere to the University’s Health and Safety Policy and guidelines.
- Adhere to the General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Act 2018.

- To undertake any other reasonable duties that may be allocated from time to time commensurate with the grading of the post and the needs of the department.
Skills and experience
- Hold a level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification.
- Desirable - hold a Personal Trainer Qualification and/or Fitness Class Instructor Qualifications.
- Registered student at Teesside University during Academic Year 2026 /27 studying a minimum of 60 credits.
- Ability to convey straightforward information in a clear and accurate manner both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to communicate information which needs careful explanation with tact and diplomacy, taking action to correct misunderstandings.
- Ability to relate and communicate well to a diverse range of staff and students.
- Ability to produce basic marketing materials.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment, supporting colleagues in need of additional help.
- Experience in dealing with internal and external customers, being responsive to requests and dealing with routine enquiries.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Ability to teach an exercise class if required for class cover.
- Ability to complete tasks and prioritise work within a given framework.
- Ability to solve standard problems in accordance with departmental procedures.
- Working knowledge of the health and fitness industry and gym operation.
- Experience of working in a gym / leisure facility.
- Customer service experience.
- Experience of using a leisure management system.
- Experience of organising fitness challenges and gym events.
