Role

This is an internal Harper Adams opportunity for Post doctoral researchers and students with relevant botanical field experience to apply for a 6 week paid fieldwork project undertaking woodland surveys this summer in the Peak District Dales.

Transport will be provided with the team, leaving Harper on Monday, traveling to Derbyshire and remaining at the accommodation until Friday, where again you travel back with the team to Harper. Looking for students with availability by week to participate.

This role offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands on experience in the conservation science sector, while developing practical survey skills within some of the UK’s most scientifically important and visually striking ravine woodland habitats.

Project Overview

You will contribute to ecological fieldwork within the Peak District Dales Special Area of Conservation (SAC), supporting ongoing research and monitoring of priority woodland habitats.

Ideal Candidate

  • Post doctoral researcher or individual with substantial botanical field experience
  • Experience in vegetation surveying and/or soil sampling
  • Strong plant identification skills
  • Ability to carry out physically demanding fieldwork outdoors
  • Interest in conservation science and habitat monitoring

This is a paid short term role and an excellent opportunity for those looking to deepen their practical ecological survey experience in a nationally important landscape.

Must bring suitable footwear and outdoor clothing. 

Duties and responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Collecting vegetation and soil data across multiple ravine woodland sites
  • Working to established scientific survey methodologies
  • Accurately recording and managing field data
  • Operating safely and effectively in steep and challenging terrain

Skills and experience

Applicants need to be methodical, well organised, physically fit and willing to work in all weather conditions. 
 
Experience in undertaking outdoor forestry and/or botanical field work is required. 
 
Botanical skills are required, particularly the ability to identify a range of trees, woodland shrubs, common grasses and ground flora to species level. On site training and familiarisation with survey methodologies will be provided. 
 
Must be a Harper Adams student.
