The Corporate Communications team is responsible for managing Liverpool John Moores University’s main social media channels, sharing key information with students, celebrating success and ensuring timely, engaging and accessible content across the year. 

This role will support the team during a particularly busy and important period, covering summer activity, July graduation and preparing for September's induction week.

A major focus of the social media intern role will be helping to create and launch a new Instagram Broadcast Channel in advance of Induction Week, designed to provide new students with clear, relevant and student-friendly information as they begin their LJMU journey. The role will also support day-to-day social media content creation and on-the-ground content during July graduation ceremonies.

This is an ideal opportunity for a third year undergraduate student or recent 2026 graduate interested in digital communications, social media or content creation to gain hands-on experience in a professional communications environment.

The Social Media Intern role is 21 hours per week and will be based at Rodney House, Mount Pleasant Campus, during the weeks commencing 29 June, 6 July, 13 July and 27 July. During the week commencing 20 July, the role will be based at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral, where the intern will work alongside the Corporate Communications team to support LJMU’s July graduation ceremonies. 

The team’s preferred working pattern for this role is Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday over a five-week period, running from week commencing 29 June to 31 July. However, there is flexibility around working days, and alternative availability can be discussed at interview if the successful candidate has a different preference.

Duties and responsibilities

To support the Corporate Communications team with social media content creation and engagement across LJMU’s main channels, with a particular focus on developing and launching an Instagram Broadcast Channel for Induction Week 2026 and supporting graduation communications.

Main duties:

  • Support the set-up and development of a dedicated Instagram Broadcast Channel aimed at new students during Induction Week. 
  • Work with the Corporate Communications team to develop a simple and effective broadcast channel content plan.
  • Research how other universities use Instagram Broadcast Channels to identify best practice and inform content planning.
  • Identify key induction messages, moments and frequently asked questions.
  • Plan and create simple, timely broadcast content such as reminders, links, polls and short updates.
  • Write short, clear and student-friendly messages for the broadcast channel.
  • Repurpose approved content from existing induction materials for use on social media.
  • Create basic “how-to” guides and responses to common student questions during this time.
  • Support the creation of content for LJMU’s Corporate social media channels, primarily Instagram and TikTok, but also Facebook and LinkedIn.
  • Research social media trends and content styles, particularly those relevant to a student audience.
  • Research and develop content ideas for the summer period and the start of the academic year.
  • Create and edit video and visual content ready to be posted on LJMU social media channels.
  • Support the Social Media Content Coordinators during LJMU’s July graduation ceremonies at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral
  • .Interview graduates to create celebratory content for LJMU’s social media channels.
  • Post Instagram Stories during graduation and respond to direct messages.
  • Support engagement on LinkedIn by congratulating graduates who tag LJMU.

Skills and experience

  • Current Level 6 (third year) LJMU student or recent LJMU graduate.
  • Confident Instagram user with a good understanding of student social media behaviour.
  • Confident TikTok user with an awareness of trends suitable for a university platform.
  • Clear written communication skills, with the ability to write concise, student‑friendly content.
  • Interest in digital communications, marketing, PR or content creation.
  • Reliable, organised and comfortable working to short deadlines.
  • Comfortable appearing on camera and presenting content for publication to LJMU’s large social media following.
  • Confident interviewing and engaging with a range of people, including students, staff and alumni.

Desirable:

  • Graduating or recently graduated with a degree in digital marketing, journalism, communications, or a related subject.
  • Experience creating or editing social media content.
