Role
*Ringfenced to current LJMU PGR students continuing study up to or beyond May 2027*Academic Success Peer Mentors will work as part of a team to deliver effective learning development support for students at all levels and across the full range of subject disciplines. The post-holders will be expected to provide effective advice on supporting students with developing their academic and library skills. They will work with students in a variety of settings and formats and will share experience of successful study strategies with small groups of students and on a one-to one basis. They will work with Academic Success Tutors and Librarians to enhance students’ use of university systems and learning tools and understanding of university assessment practices.

Duties and responsibilities

Complete mandatory training Tuesday 7th > Thursday 9th July 2026 and be ready to commence the role in the week beginning Monday 14th September 2026. 

Using a coaching/mentor approach, support students with developing their academic and library skills. For example, using Discover, searching and evaluating information, planning assignments, managing reading, developing effective study practices, time management, revision, referencing and using Cite Them Right etc. 

Signpost students to Academic Skills Tutors or Academic Engagement Librarians as well as other student support services when appropriate/necessary. 

Support the Academic Success team with marketing and promotion of activities, for example, promotion in lectures, social media, video/podcast creation, working with JMSU. 

Develop resources designed to support students with academic and Library skills development such as handouts, videos, podcasts etc. 

Support wider Academic Success provision as and when this might arise.  

Attend supervision meetings to develop in role and to reflect on practice. 

Skills and experience

Must be a PGR student continuing studies up to May 2027 or beyond. 

Have experience in effective study in particular a good standard of academic writing/skills development and a high standard of written and spoken English. 

Have an approachable and friendly attitude with a willingness and enthusiasm to help other students in their academic development from varying cultural and educational backgrounds. 

Be organised and reliable with effective communication skills. 

Be willing to develop mentoring/coaching skills with the support from members of the Academic Success Team and be open to feedback. 

Be willing to take direction and to work within the guidelines of the Academic Success Team. 

Have interest in professional development and learning through this role.  

Previous experience of mentoring and/or supporting other students is desirable but not essential.
