Unitemps are recruiting for a Tissue Curator. This role is for a June 8th start date and has a projected end date of December 8th 2026. This is a part-time role at 31.5 hours per week. Payment is set at £19.14 per hour + £3.58 holiday pay. This role will be fully campus based working.
 

We are one of the world’s leading research centres for the study of prions and their wider relevance to neurodegenerative disease with a growing research activity in Alzheimer’s disease (www.prion.ucl.ac.uk). The Institute is highly multidisciplinary with close integration of structural and molecular biology, genetics, cellular and animal models, small molecule and immuno-therapeutics and clinical research. MRC and UCL have jointly invested £30 million in provision of a dedicated new building in central London for the Institute supporting the vision to expand research in protein misfolding and aggregation in neurodegenerative disease.

Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Tissue Curator to join our team. The post-holder will be part of the Laboratory, Safety and Tissue Management Team and will be responsible for day to day tissue and sample storage, access management and database records covering all sites ensuring and enabling researcher access to material for research in a prompt and efficient way underpinning the Institutes multi-disciplinary basic and clinical research programmes.

Substantial experience working in a biomedical research/laboratory environment within an academic, NHS or pharmaceutical setting background is essential as is a good understanding of data protection legislation and GDPR, confidentiality and consent requirements in clinical and medical research. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required as are excellent attention to detail and record keeping.

Duties and responsibilities

Main duties

  • Corroborate and register human and other biological samples on to a bespoke sample management database and into a human sample archive.
  • Update research records ensuring there is a clear audit trail from sample receipt to end-use or disposal in line with legislation, guidelines, policy and - local standard operating procedures.
  • Ensure accuracy and dependability of record keeping and electronic data management.
  • Perform sample searches and generate reports from databases for internal reporting.
  • Prepare, review and provide input into quality assurance processes and documentation.
  • Organise and co-ordinate audits. Audits will include an audit of sample and tissue locations, and acting on findings to maintain archive integrity.
  • Evaluate audit and findings and consult with seniors for an appropriate course of action and reporting requirements.
  • Assist with the preparation of external audits and inspections.
  • Support researchers put together large panels of samples, as required.
  • Receive clinical samples and Post-Mortem tissue into the laboratory for Histology and book into freezer archive.
  • Assistance with freezer monitoring via the t-scan system. Some emergency cover out of hours may be required in the event of a freezer failure.
  • Contribute and responding to the Business Continuity Plan (BCP) as needed.

Working relationships:

  • The post-holder will report to the Institute Laboratory, Safety and Tissue Manager and work closely with the research and clinical teams and other members of the Institute and Clinic.

Skills and experience

  • BSc (Hons) or equivalent in a Biomedical, Life, Pharmaceutical or- Biological Science 
  • Database trouble-shooting and dealing with queries 
  • Computer literacy including MS Office - advanced Word, Excel and search engines 
  • Excellent attention to detail and record keeping
  • Trouble-shooting and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work with staff at all levels and across multi-disciplinary teams
  • Excellent communication, organisational and time management skills
  • Ability to work on own initiative and work independently
  • Prioritise work effectively and work to deadlines
  • Able to deal with unplanned/unscheduled work
