The Liverpool Research Institute for Climate and Sustainability (LiRICS) is offering an internship to support the development of resources that enable academic staff to effectively articulate sustainability considerations within research grant applications.

The role will focus on creating clear, practical and consistent guidance aligned with Liverpool John Moores University’s strategic commitments, including the Climate and Sustainability Plan 2025–2030, the Concordat for the Environmental Sustainability of Research and Innovation Practice, and the University’s engagement with the Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF).

Working closely with academic colleagues, research development staff, and sustainability teams, the intern will contribute to strengthening the integration of environmental sustainability across LJMU’s research portfolio. This role offers valuable insight into the intersection of research funding, institutional strategy, and sustainability practice within the higher education sector.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Review and synthesise internal and external guidance relevant to sustainability in research funding, including major funder requirements and sector best practice.
  • Support the development of guidance materials (e.g. templates, examples, checklists, briefing notes) to help academics draft strong sustainability statements for grant applications.
  • Ensure materials align with and reference LJMU’s Climate and Sustainability Plan 2025–2030, supporting consistent institutional messaging.
  • Map sustainability statement guidance to the principles of the Concordat for the Environmental Sustainability of Research and Innovation Practice, highlighting how researchers can evidence alignment.
  • Incorporate practical examples of environmentally sustainable research practices, including laboratory-based activity connected to the LEAF framework where relevant.
  • Engage with academic staff across disciplines to understand differing research contexts and tailor guidance accordingly.
  • Translate complex sustainability concepts and frameworks into clear, accessible language suitable for grant proposals.
  • Support feedback and iteration of materials based on academic and professional services input.
  • Assist with related research, engagement, or administrative tasks within LiRICS as required.

Skills and experience
Essential

  • Strong written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise, and structured guidance materials.
  • Demonstrable interest in climate change, environmental sustainability, or sustainable research practice.
  • Ability to research, analyse, and synthesise information from diverse sources.
  • Good organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage tasks independently.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with academic and professional services colleagues.

Desirable

  • Familiarity with research funding processes or grant application development.
  • Understanding of sustainability frameworks, institutional strategies, or research governance (e.g. net zero, environmental impact, responsible research and innovation).
  • Awareness of the Concordat for the Environmental Sustainability of Research and Innovation Practice or laboratory sustainability initiatives such as LEAF.
  • Experience developing resources or guidance for academic or professional audiences.
  • Knowledge of the UK higher education or research environment.
