The Liverpool Research Institute for Climate and Sustainability (LiRICS) is offering an internship to support the mapping and analysis of existing engagement activity across climate and sustainability research and knowledge exchange at Liverpool John Moores University. 
 
The role will provide an evidence base to inform the development of a coordinated and strategic approach to external engagement. Working closely with the LiRICS Head and leadership team, the intern will help identify current partnerships, networks, engagement activities, and impact pathways involving academics and external stakeholders. 
 
This role is ideal for a student or recent graduate with an interest in research, sustainability, and engagement, and offers valuable insight into how universities build relationships and influence beyond academia.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Identify and map existing climate and sustainability research and knowledge exchange engagement activity across LJMU.
  • Gather information on academic partnerships, external collaborations, networks, projects, and engagement mechanisms with sectoral, community, policy, and industry stakeholders.
  • Review existing internal documentation, websites, reports, and datasets to capture relevant engagement activity.
  • Engage with academic and professional services staff to understand the scope, nature, and purpose of ongoing engagement.
  • Analyse mapped activity to identify themes, strengths, gaps, overlaps, and opportunities for future development.
  • Produce clear summaries, visual maps, or short reports to support understanding of current engagement activity.
  • Contribute evidence and insights to support the LiRICS Head and leadership team in the development of an external engagement plan.
  • Make practical recommendations for improving coordination, visibility, and strategic alignment of engagement activity.
  • Undertake related research or administrative tasks as required to support LiRICS priorities.

Skills and experience
Essential

  • Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to gather, organise, and synthesise information.
  • Clear written communication skills, including the ability to produce structured summaries and reports.
  • Interest in climate change, sustainability, research impact, or knowledge exchange.
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail.• Ability to work independently and manage tasks effectively.
  • Confidence communicating with a range of colleagues in an academic setting.

Desirable

  • Understanding of knowledge exchange, public engagement, or research impact.
  • Experience mapping or reviewing projects, partnerships, or networks.
  • Familiarity with the higher education or research environment.
  • Ability to present information visually (e.g. tables, diagrams, or simple maps).
  • Interest in how research informs policy, practice, or societal change.
