The Liverpool Research Institute for Climate and Sustainability (LiRICS) is offering a communications internship to support a defined programme of work focused on enhancing the Institute’s profile, visibility, and digital presence. The internship will deliver practical communications outputs that support LiRICS’ strategic objectives and can be sustained beyond the duration of the role.
Working closely with the LiRICS Head and leadership team, the intern will support updates to the Institute’s website, develop guidance and materials to support effective and consistent social media practice, and contribute to building a clear and recognisable LiRICS brand.
This role is particularly suited to a student or recent graduate seeking focused, hands on experience in research communications within a climate and sustainability context.
Duties and responsibilities
- Update and improve content on the LiRICS website to ensure it is accurate, clear, and aligned with the Institute’s messaging.
- Develop concise guidance and practical materials for the LiRICS team on effective and professional social media use.
- Support the creation of reusable communications assets (e.g. social media templates, key messages, basic content plans) to provide value beyond the internship period.
- Assist the LiRICS Head and leadership team in clarifying and communicating key messages that support brand development and visibility.
- Draft and schedule social media content that promotes LiRICS research, events, and activities during the internship.
- Identify short term opportunities to increase LiRICS’ visibility across LJMU and to external audiences.
- Provide recommendations for future communications activity based on insights gained during the internship.
- Undertake other time limited communications tasks as required to support LiRICS priorities.
Skills and experience
Essential
- Strong written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear and engaging content to deadlines.
- An interest in communications, marketing, or public engagement, ideally within a sustainability or academic environment.
- Familiarity with common social media platforms and an understanding of professional social media practice.
- Confidence using digital platforms, including websites or content management systems.• Good organisational skills and the ability to deliver agreed outputs within a short time frame.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a small team.
Desirable
- Experience updating website content or managing digital communications.
- Interest in branding, identity development, or communications strategy.
- Experience producing guidance or toolkits for internal audiences.
- Interest in climate change, sustainability, or research impact.
- Awareness of the higher education or research environment.
