Description

Role
*Ringfenced to LJMU students and graduates (within the last 2 years) only.*

We are seeking student actors to take part in a live theatre production exploring contemporary mental health experiences, with particular focus on the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in mental health treatment, support, diagnosis, and care. The project will critically examine both the opportunities and ethical challenges of AI‑led approaches, including issues of access, autonomy, data, empathy, and trust.

The production draws on principles of legislative theatre, encouraging audiences to actively engage with the performance and participate in structured discussion and debate about future policy, practice, and social responses to mental health.

The project will be created and performed in a supportive, inclusive, and ethically informed environment, with close attention to wellbeing, safeguarding, and responsible representation.

Duties and responsibilities

Successful applicants will:

  • Rehearse and perform in a scripted and/or devised theatre production
  • Portray characters and scenarios that explore lived experience and technological intervention
  • Participate in interactive performance elements informed by legislative theatre, including paused scenes, audience questioning, or facilitated debate
  • Work collaboratively with the director, creative team, and fellow performers
  • Contribute to post‑performance discussions, forums, or workshops designed to stimulate reflection and dialogue
  • Maintain professional standards of commitment, punctuality, and respectful collaboration

Skills and experience

Essential:

  • Previous acting or performance experience
  • Enthusiasm for acting and live performance
  • Reliability and availability for rehearsals and performances (rehearsals sometime between 11-22 May 2026, dress rehearsal on 26 May and performance workshops on 27 and 28 May 2026 )
  • Willingness to engage with complex, ethically challenging subject matter
  • Openness to participatory and discussion‑based theatre practices
  • Ability to work sensitively and respectfully within a diverse ensemble

Desirable (but not essential):

  • Familiarity with applied theatre, forum theatre, or devised performance
