Role

Unitemps are recruiting for a Assistant Technician (Media Preparation Facility). This role is for an asap start date (early May) and has a projected end date of October 27th 2026. This is a full-time role at 36.5 hours per week. Payment is set at £16.76 per hour + £3.14 holiday pay. This role will be campus based working.

*This role is suitable for UCL Students and UCL Graduates only.

This position requires regular manual handling tasks, including the lifting, moving, and carrying of materials as part of the daily duties. Manual handling is provided by UCL.

Health and safety risks are included in the risk assessment for the facility and are shared and communicated as part of the training. Full training of using the equipment and the processes are provided by the core technical team and PhD student who works closely with the team.

Duties and responsibilities

Essential:

  • Level 3 qualification (A-Level, IB Diploma, Advanced Diploma, BTEC, NVQ) in a relevant Sciences subject or equivalent experience. 
  • Experience of working in a laboratory-based environment. 
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of using laboratory equipment. 
  • Experience of working collaboratively in a team.

Desirable: 

  • BSc/Level 6 or Level 5 qualification in a relevant Biological Sciences subject or equivalent experience. 
  • Some theoretical and practical knowledge of preparing large volumes of media and of operating industrial glass washers and autoclaves. 
  • Experience of working in a technical role in a research environment. 
  • Knowledge and understanding of the higher education sector

Skills and experience

Qualifications, experience and knowledge

  • Good IT knowledge including MS word applications and the internet.
  • Good numerical skills and understanding of statistical concepts.
  • Ability to understand and use of digital solution to collect, manage and analyse data.
  • Hold good time management and organisational skills, ability to prioritise, multitask and focus.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively within the closer teams and with key stakeholders.
  • Ability to provide a consistent on-site presence to support in-person laboratory operations and services, including tasks requiring walking, standing for extended periods, and manual handling in compliance with health and safety standards and following adequate training
  • Holds an excellent work-ethics including commitment to the role, reliability, high levels of efficiency, accuracy and attention to details
  • Possesses a flexible and helpful approach to working and to be willing to provide an emergency out of hours callout service
  • Able to work with autonomy, independence and initiative and yet willing to take responsibility and be held accountable
  • Being a positive and collaborative team member who contributes actively, supports colleagues, and is open to learning and continuous improvement. 
  • Demonstrating willingness to provide and respond to feedback
