Unitemps are recruiting for a Research Assistant. This role is for a May 11th 2026 start date and has a projected end date of July 31st 2026. This is a part-time role at 3 hours per week. Payment is set at £20.57 per hour + £3.85 holiday pay. This role will be remote working.
The Department of Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment is a world-leading centre for economics, geography, business, mathematics, science and humanities education. It has an international reputation for research, leading an extensive range of development projects, special interest groups and doctoral studies.
The current role is for a Research Assistant to support data collection for the project "The dual role of process goals when implementing the written curriculum in Sweden and England". This is a collaborative project between UCL and Umeå University (Sweden), funded by the Swedish Research Council. The project lead at UCL is Professor Candia Morgan, within the Mathematics Education Special Interest Group.
The project aims to develop knowledge about how mathematical reasoning is conceptualised in the curriculum, in textbooks and by teachers and how it is implemented in classrooms.
Duties and responsibilities
The main purpose of the Research Assistant position will be to organise and carry out interviews with school teachers in England, focusing on their teaching of mathematical reasoning as part of the National Curriculum for Mathematics.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Contact schools in England to recruit teachers to participate in the project.
- Provide interested teachers with information about the project and their involvement in it.
- Obtain written consent from teachers who agree to participate.
- Negotiate mutually agreeable times with teachers for interviews.
- Organise a schedule of school visits and/or video calls for data collection.
- Conduct and audio-record face-to-face and on-line interviews with teachers.
- Verify transcriptions of audio-recorded interviews.
- Upload data files to project storage space.
- Liaise with the Project Lead to plan actions and report progress.
- Travel as necessary within England to collect data.
- At all times, conduct the research in accordance with Codes of Practice and Institute’s policies in relation to ethics, data collection and processing and other relevant policies.
A suitable candidate will have opportunities to participate in other project activities including co-authoring publications.
Skills and experience
Qualifications, experience and knowledge:
- Masters degree or equivalent in Social Science discipline
- Experience of working in a school as a teacher, teaching assistant or researcher
- A working knowledge of research interviewing techniques
- A good understanding of mathematics up to at least GCSE level
- A sound understanding of research ethics applicable in a school context
Skills and abilities:
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with research participants and with the project team
- Good organisation skills, including the ability to schedule school visits for data collection
- Competent use of recording equipment
- Willingness to travel within England for data collection
Desirable criteria:
- Experience of collecting research data using interviews
- Experience of teaching mathematics in England
