Role

The Gallery Assistant Facilitator role is an essential delivery position at Attenborough Arts Centre, University of Leicester, supporting the Centre’s mission of Art for All. The post works directly with children and families at weekends and during special events throughout the year, encouraging public engagement and creative responses to exhibitions and performance programmes, while also supporting Learning and Communities activity across Leicester.

The post holder will join a team of Gallery Assistant Facilitators within the Learning and Communities team, working collaboratively with artists, schools and community groups, including children, young people, families and people with complex needs. Attenborough Arts Centre is an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation for 2023–27, and this role plays a key part in delivering the Activity Plan in response to Arts Council England’s Let’s Create strategy.

Duties and responsibilities

The role involves delivering inclusive, family-friendly public programmes at weekends and during special events, including activities such as the Saturday Gallery Art Club and Sunday Sessions. The post holder will support public engagement activity, monitor gallery spaces and materials, and contribute to the smooth running of Learning and Communities activity by responding to enquiries in person, by phone and by email, while maintaining high standards of customer care for all visitors, including those requiring additional support.

The role also includes administrative and record-keeping duties such as gathering feedback, entering data for evaluation, and maintaining accurate records in line with University of Leicester guidelines. The post holder will plan and prioritise their workload, respond flexibly to unscheduled tasks, work effectively as part of a team, and adhere to safeguarding and health and safety policies to uphold a strong culture of safety and inclusion. Additional training will be provided where required.

Skills and experience

The successful candidate will have the ability to support people with a wide range of needs through creative activity and will be confident communicating with diverse audiences, including people with special educational needs and disabilities. Strong written English skills, attention to detail, effective time management and a methodical approach to work are essential, alongside a commitment to delivering high-quality customer care and administrative support.

Applicants must be able to work effectively as part of a team, manage changing priorities, and apply relevant health and safety policies and procedures. Essential qualifications include five GCSEs at grade C or above, or equivalent, including Maths and English, good IT skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office, and some broadly related experience in the arts, including experience of working with children and young people.

Flexibility to work evenings and weekends is essential.
