Role
We have an exciting opportunity for a talented and motivated individual to join the Technical Services Team supporting the Department of Chemistry’s Teaching Laboratories at the University of Warwick.
Reporting to the Deputy Technical Services Manager (DTSM), you will be part of a team of Senior Teaching Lab Technicians and Technical Assistants who deliver high quality technical support to staff, students and visitors in the Department of Chemistry's Teaching Laboratories. You will assist with the organisation and daily running of our teaching laboratories, ensuring a safe working environment and general tidiness of the laboratories to deadline.
Typical duties include replenishing consumables, cleaning laboratory areas, surfaces and equipment, preparing laboratory equipment, washing glassware, reorganisation of laboratory spaces, supporting stock checks, handling and disposing of chemicals.
Although duties are laboratory-based, this role does not involve conducting specialist research activities with research groups, or teaching or demonstrating to students, and is fully on-site with no remote or hybrid working.
Working hours are:36.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday expected to start at 08:30am each day. Working hours may flex dependent upon operational need.
Duties and responsibilities
1. Assist with maintenance of a stock of reagents, solutions, intermediates, glassware and other materials as required.
2. Assist with the setting-up of experiments including laying out laboratory apparatus, chemicals and other consumables for laboratory courses (this will require manual handling/movement of heavy items).
3. Maintain a visible and accessible presence in the teaching laboratories, proactively supporting students, demonstrators and academics, responding to queries and serving at the hatch when required.
4. Prepare solutions, fill jars for practical classes and assist the Senior Teaching Laboratory Technicians with the preparation of laboratory courses.
5. Wash and dry glassware including student kits.
6. Maintain laboratory tidiness and cleanliness, identifying, and reporting any maintenance related issues.
7. Collect, store and label waste materials following best practice ensuring that handling of materials, labelling, and storage comply with all relevant safety regulations and approved departmental and university procedures.
8. Maintain stocks of reagents, glassware and other apparatus. Checking in new items and ensuring that they are captured correctly in any inventories.
9. Handle chemicals which cover a range of hazards, including toxic chemicals and corrosives, as well as cryogens as examples. There may also be compressed gas cylinders or heavy items to move (i.e. manual handling). This is an active lab role where you would be expected to be on your feet for majority of the day.
10. Act with professionalism at all times and show respect to their colleagues and to understand and adhere to the University's value of dignity at work; all members of the department are also expected to work collegially and to support all the teams with which they have contact in achieving the University's objectives.
11. Undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade and level of responsibility of this post, for which the post holder has the necessary experience and/or training, as instructed by the Deputy Technical Services and Facilities Manager and senior members of staff. This may include supporting other teams in the Department of Chemistry as required.
Skills and experience
Essential Criteria
- Good general level of science education preferably including NVQ level 1, or 2, or educated to GCSE level of equivalent or experience in a similar related role.
- Experience of working in a customer facing role.
- Experience of working within an organisation where procedures have to be followed.
- Good IT skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office software and Outlook.
- Some knowledge of laboratory hazards and being familiar with chemical nomenclature and basic chemical properties to ensure safe working practices.
- Good oral and written skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of students, staff and individuals at all levels.
- Highly organised with experience of managing and prioritising a large volume of work and working to deadlines.
- A can-do attitude with a high degree of flexibility and the ability to adapt to frequently changing priorities.
- An ability to work collaboratively and effectively with academic and administrative colleagues, and with colleagues outside the University to promote collegiality.
Desirable Criteria
- Knowledge of COSHH and DSEAR regulations and relevant Safe Handling Regulations would be desirable.
- Previous experience of accurately inputting into databases, maintaining manual/ electronic records and the analysis and manipulation of this data would be desirable.
