Description

Role
This project is situated within the ECLS’s Transformations programme, a programme where tutor teams (of students within the department) visit local secondary schools to provide after-school creative writing lessons. These lessons focus around the theme of the specific reader selected by the partner school. This project centres around the development of the new ‘Sci-fi’ reader, a collection of texts which explores different aspects of the sci-fi genre and relates to a current ECLS module. This new theme has been discussed with and supported by the partner schools collaborating with Transformations.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Creation of a new printed Sci-fi themed teaching resource  (a collection of extracts known as a ‘reader’) using own research, ideas generated by other students and also staff in partner schools
  • Use judgement in final selection of extracts and organise into a logical order using an agreed structure
  • Contribute to the visual design of the reader
  • Work collaboratively with the ECLS Widening Participation Officer and library staff to ensure all extracts comply with relevant copyright laws
  • After completing the reader, create engaging teaching materials designed for school students aged 11-15 based on the contents of the reader

Skills and experience

Essential

  • Experience of volunteering as a Transformations tutor with English and Comparative Literary Studies for at least one full cycle of the program (autumn and spring terms)
  • Excellent knowledge of the Sci-fi genre.  This could be evidenced through involvement in the Sci-fi reader team, study of a related academic module within ECLS or through your wider reading
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the high levels of accuracy and attention to detail
  • An organised approach and ability to adhere to deadlines
  • Excellent team working skills combined with the ability to work independently
  • Able to understand a brief, collate information from a number of different sources and follow agreed guidelines

Desirable

  • Visual design skills – please note that at least one of the Transformations Sci-fi Reader Creators needs to have strong skills in visual design, ideally including the use of Canva
