Description
Role
This internship forms part of a cutting edge research project investigating how metformin, a widely used anti diabetic medication affects inflammatory biomarkers (Interleukin 6 and CRP) in men with prostate cancer from different ethnic backgrounds.
The intern will explore real-world clinical data to understand ethnic differences in inflammation and potential therapeutic effects of metformin.
This project offers an exceptional opportunity to gain hands on experience in clinical data science, translational bioinformatics, epidemiology, and health inequalities research.
This internship would offer two penultimate year undergraduate biomedical science students the privilege of extracting and analysing clinical data form prostate cancer patients. The internship is hosted at the University of Staffordshire and would provide the opportunity for intern to interact directly with clinical teams via the University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM). The internship is led by Dr Adeola Grace Atobatele working with experienced lecturer and Biomedical scientist, Dr Trust Diya, supporting students to gain hands on experience in clinical data, translational bioinformatics and health inequalities research alongside NHS partners.
Duties and responsibilities
Depending on the role, and with flexibility across projects, interns would:
- Build and execute data queries using the TriNetX clinical research platform
- Extract and organise Interleukin 6 and CRP data from prostate cancer patient cohorts
- Clean and prepare datasets (coding ethnicity, harmonising units, addressing missingness)
- Conduct supervised statistical analysis (descriptive statistics, regression modelling, interaction effects)
- Interpret findings and contribute to a final research report
- Create a short teaching or engagement resource (e.g., video, blog, or infographic) for use in Biomedical Science programmes
- Participate in an UHNM laboratory placement week, gaining exposure to biomarker testing and sample handling
Skills and experience
Interested in biomedical science, molecular biology, health data science, or epidemiology
Location
Science Centre - University of Staffordshire, Leek Road

Our Commitment to Inclusion
We are committed to creating an inclusive, supportive, and equitable research environment.
We welcome applications from students of all backgrounds and actively encourage participation from groups traditionally Under-represented in biomedical and health data science.
We recognise the value of diverse perspectives in improving research quality, fostering innovation, and addressing health inequalities. All selection decisions will be made based on merit, potential, and alignment with the project, and reasonable adjustments will be provided to ensure all candidates can participate fully. All interns will receive EDI training to ensure an inclusive, respectful, and culturally informed research experience.
