Role
We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated Technical Assistant to join our Technical Services Team at the University of Warwick’s Department of Chemistry.
In this role, you will provide essential support to our research areas and help maintain the department’s infrastructure to ensure a safe and functional environment for everyone. While your primary focus will be supporting our researchers, you will work flexibly across the department, including Teaching Laboratories and Chemistry Stores, to ensure we always maintain high service levels.
Reporting to a Deputy Technical Services Manager (DTSM), you will be a key part of a team dedicated to delivering high-quality technical support to staff, students, and visitors. If you have experience in technical services and a flexible, team-oriented approach, we would love to hear from you.
- Please note that while some duties are laboratory-based, this role does not involve conducting research activities and is fully on-site with no remote or hybrid working. The role also includes an outdoor element and manual handling responsibilities.
- This role is to start ASAP until 29/5/26 in the first instance, with a possibility to be extended further.
- Working Hours: 36.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Your exact start time (typically between 8:00am and 9:00am) will be confirmed upon appointment. Please note that some flexibility may be required, particularly during the initial training period.
Duties and responsibilities
- Provision of liquid nitrogen – Filling and moving pressurised and non-pressurised dewars (manual handling aspect) training will be provided
- Collection, storage and labelling of waste materials following best practice and ensuring that handling of materials, labelling and storage, compliant with all relevant safety regulation and approved departmental and university procedures. Ensuring that stocks of labelled containers are available for use by members of the department
- Emptying specialist waste bins to external areas or as required, and use of autoclaves (this will require some manual handling/moving of heavy items)
- Support departmental statutory compliance, by gathering data on e.g. water outlet flushing, LEV pre-use checks etc.
- Assist research staff and students with re-organisation of research and office or other spaces, moving furniture and equipment as required (manual handling).
- Supporting the maintenance of an inventory of chemicals and research equipment.
- Movement of gas cylinders and connection to manifolds (manual handling).
- To always act with professionalism and show respect to their colleagues and to understand and adhere to the University's value of dignity at work; they are also expected to work collegially and to support all the teams with which they have contact in achieving the University's objectives.
- Any other duties commensurate with the grade and level of responsibility of this post, for which the post holder has the necessary experience and/or training.
Skills and experience
Essential Criteria
- Good general level of science education (NVQ level 1 or 2/GCSE level or equivalent) or experience in a similar related role
- Experience of working in a customer facing role
- Experience of working within an environment where procedures must be followed
- Good IT skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office software and Outlook
- Some knowledge of laboratory hazards and being familiar with chemical nomenclature
- Good oral and written skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of students, staff and individuals at all levels
- Highly organised and experience of working to deadlines
- A can-do attitude with a high degree of flexibility and the ability to adapt to frequently changing priorities
- Demonstrable ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
Desirable Criteria
- Knowledge of COSHH regulations and relevant Safe Handling Regulations would be desirable
- Experience of accurately inputting into databases, maintaining manual/ electronic records
- Experience in handling liquid nitrogen, hazardous chemicals or chemical waste
