Role

The role below is only for Middlesex University students/Alumni 

As a Student Support Assistant, you will collaborate with the Global Opportunities & Short Course Officer to assist student groups primarily from Hong Kong and China participating in the Cultural & Language Immersion Scheme/IELTS preparation programme (CALIS). Your role involves supporting students during both on-campus and off-campus events and activities throughout the weekdays and weekends.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with student arrival, enrolment, inductions and campus tour
  • Act as a key point of contact for students during the summer
  • Engage with students in the afternoons and weekends through cultural trips and activities
  • Assist with service learning activities to enhance the student experience
  • Accompany students on various excursions alongside other Student Ambassadors

Activities and Trips:

  • London-based activities such as walking tours, visits to the London Eye, musical theatre, horse riding, industrial visits, and the Frameless Immersive Art Experience.
  • Excursions to Brighton, Windsor, Oxford and Greenwich.

There are two groups arriving, and their schedules overlap. You will be assigned to assist one of the groups. The dates are as mentioned above.

Duties and responsibilities

Essential:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills
  • Ability to work proactively with a minimum of supervision
  • Ability to work methodically to meet deadlines, paying close attention to detail
  • Ability to deal with enquiries pertinent to the post and to solve problems
  • Demonstrate experience in co-ordinating events, with evidence of being able to troubleshoot as necessary.
  • Flexible approach and evidence of a high level of customer care.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Good team player
  • Intercultural awareness and empathy for international students, particularly from Hong Kong and China.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience of a HE summer school or similar environment
  • Knowledge of Middlesex University’s structures, procedures and regulations
  • Previous experience of working with international students in an education setting
  • Knowledge of London’s attractions and services for visitors in particular the public transport system.

Skills and experience

Preparation for Student Arrival

  • Review and check arrangements
  • Assemble welcome packs with Oyster cards
  • Meet students at London Heathrow Airport
  • Support students settling into accommodation
  • Set up WhatsApp group for student support

Cultural Events on and off campus

  • Lead group to attraction and provide information and direction where appropriate
  • Count students onto the coach on departure of the trips
  • Check coaches for lost property and rubbish when back on campus
  • Walking tours in London, Oxford, Windsor & Brighton
  • Ensure students are reminded via WhatsApp of up and coming events to engage interest
  • Be mindful of student welfare
  • Support and participate in sport events

Pastoral Care

  • Answer a wide range of general student enquiries
  • Advise students about travel
  • Help students to book doctor and dentist appointments if required
  • Answer student enquiries about life in London and British culture
  • Support service learning workshops for IELTS students
  • Report serious incidents to Director

General

General administrative support and assistance across cultural and social activities under the direction of the International Mobility & Short Course Officer

Additional information

Flexibility: Working Mon-Fri; with weekend trips included. Given the need for flexibility in order to meet the changing requirements, the duties/location of this post and the role of the post holder may be changed after consultation.      

Two groups start and end date:     Group 1:     14 May 2026 to 15 June 2026

                    Group 2:      20 May 2026 to 22 June 2026
