Role
Unitemps are recruiting for a Student Usher within the Built Environment Faculty Office. The role is to work ASAP and will run until 15th May 2026 part time at 12.75 hours per week. Payment is set at £19.14+ holiday pay per hour and the role will be CAMPUS based.
The postholder will support the day-to-day running of The Bartlett’s bicentenary exhibition at 22 Gordon Street, helping to ensure that the exhibition is open, welcoming, safe and functioning correctly for visitors. The role contributes directly to the successful presentation of a professional, accessible and well-managed exhibition environment during public opening hours.
The postholder is accountable for providing reliable on-site support during the exhibition run, including checking that exhibits are switched on and operating as intended, welcoming and guiding visitors, answering basic questions, and alerting the Curator or project team promptly to any issues affecting the visitor experience or the safe operation of the exhibition.
Duties and responsibilities
- Open and check the exhibition space at the start of each shift to ensure exhibits, screens, lights and other display elements are turned on and operating correctly.
- Monitor the condition and presentation of the exhibition during opening hours to ensure the gallery remains safe, tidy and visitor-ready.
- Welcome visitors to the exhibition and provide a friendly first point of contact for general queries.
- Provide basic information about the exhibition and individual exhibits to support visitor understanding and engagement.
- Offer informal tours or introductions to the exhibition when required, in line with guidance provided by the Curator.
- Support visitors with wayfinding and orientation within the exhibition space to ensure an accessible and positive experience.
- Observe the exhibition environment and identify any practical, technical or visitor-related issues that require attention.
- Report faults, maintenance needs, display issues or health and safety concerns promptly to the Curator or relevant member of the project team.
- Carry out routine checks during shifts to ensure digital, moving image, sound or interactive elements remain switched on and functioning as intended.
- Help protect exhibits and display materials by monitoring visitor behaviour and intervening appropriately and courteously where necessary.
- Maintain basic records of checks, issues or incidents as required by the exhibition team.
- Assist with the closing down of the exhibition space at the end of each shift, including checking that relevant equipment is turned off or secured as instructed.
- Work collaboratively with the Curator and other members of staff to support the smooth daily operation of the exhibition.
- Support a welcoming, inclusive and professional environment for all visitors throughout the exhibition run.
- Work on site at 22 Gordon Street during the exhibition period according to the agreed rota and opening schedule.
Skills and experience
- Experience of working in a customer-facing, public-facing, events, gallery, museum, retail, hospitality, front-of-house or similar environment.
- Experience of providing clear and helpful information to a range of people in person.
- Experience of working reliably as part of a team and following instructions in a professional environment.
- A good understanding of the importance of visitor care, professionalism and punctuality in a public-facing role.
- A basic understanding of the need to monitor spaces, equipment or displays and report issues promptly and accurately.
- Ability to communicate clearly, confidently and courteously with visitors, colleagues and stakeholders.
- Ability to provide a welcoming and inclusive experience for visitors from a wide range of backgrounds.
- Ability to explain information clearly and answer straightforward questions about the exhibition using guidance provided.
- Ability to remain attentive, organised and reliable during routine monitoring tasks throughout a shift.
- Ability to identify problems and report them promptly and appropriately to the relevant person.
- Ability to work calmly and professionally in a public-facing environment.
- Ability to manage time effectively and carry out opening, monitoring and closing tasks consistently.
- Experience of working in an exhibition, gallery, museum, open day, event or other cultural or public engagement setting.
- Interest in architecture, cities, the built environment, public engagement or exhibition practice.
- Ability to adapt to changing visitor needs and day-to-day operational requirements.
