Role
The JLPT Assistant will support the delivery of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test within the School of Arts, Media and Communication and Languages at Leicester. The role contributes to the smooth and professional running of all examinations, ensuring that candidates experience a well-organised, fair and secure testing environment. It is a temporary position funded by JLPT examination fees.
Working on campus during the exam period, the postholder will assist with candidate registration, exam room preparation and the supervision of language knowledge, reading comprehension and listening assessment. They will play a key part in upholding the University’s principles of integrity, inclusivity and academic excellence, while supporting an assessment recognised internationally for Japanese language certification.
Duties and responsibilities
The postholder will attend mandatory training sessions and meetings in advance of the test day to ensure full familiarity with procedures and expectations. On the day of the assessment, they will set up the examination room, preparing tables and materials, and ensuring that the physical environment meets all requirements for the different components of the JLPT. They will also support candidate registration and guide examinees throughout the building.
During the examinations, the JLPT Assistant will maintain vigilance at all stages, observing candidates, enforcing exam rules and identifying any irregularities. They will work collaboratively with colleagues and the JLPT Coordinator to ensure all activities follow established schedules and procedures. After the exam, they will help restore the room to its original configuration and support any administrative tasks necessary for completion of the event.
Below is a summary of the anticipated hours/dates;
- All staff briefing and training - Friday 5th June 2026 (14:00-16:00 /17:30-19:30 - 2 hours)
- Exam day TBC (09:00 and up to 16:30 - hours are estimated and to be confirmed)
- Layout change – Saturday 04 July 2026 (2 hours)
- Basic/refresher training – 1 hour (optional)
- Exam paper sorting – 2 hours (optional)
Skills and experience
The successful candidate will be able to follow instructions accurately, understand exam procedures and reliably meet required reporting times. They will bring experience of working within a team, demonstrating effective communication skills, a responsible approach to duties and an ability to engage professionally with colleagues, candidates and the JLPT Coordinator.
A willingness to take on varied tasks throughout the day is desirable, including supporting examinees with queries and assisting proctors where needed. Experience of exam invigilation, customer service or roles requiring high levels of attention to detail would be beneficial.
