Description

Role
The purpose of thi role is to provide mentoring to students to develop skills for academic success. The post holder will work with individuals on the motivation mentoring scheme as part of the access and participation plan funding. The mentors will work with students across the institution implementing appropriate mentoring strategies for individual students. They will keep appropriate records of interventions and use their experience to inform research and practice into student engagement and the overall student academic experience. The initial project will focus on incoming students invited to the Motivation Mentor scheme.

Duties and responsibilities

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

• Mentor individuals, within a group setting and occasional indivuals.

• Become familiar with the range of support mechanisms available to students, and signpost students to these as appropriate.

• Record contact with mentees and any interventions they provide. 

• Undertake appropriate training and development for the role to ensure consistent and well-informed practice.

• Complete an evaluation of the mentoring scheme to support the longevity of the programme.

Generic Duties and Responsibilities:

• The post holder will be expected to undertake other responsibilities and training relevant to role.

• The post holder will be responsible and accountable for ensuring all employment legislative requirements are adhered to including equality and diversity and health and safety issues.

• The job description may be altered at any time in the future in line with the level of the post to meet changing institutional requirements, but only in full consultation with the post holder.

ESSENTIAL:
 
- Undertaking a University of Northampton undergraduate degree programme and/or studied at the institution for a year or more.
- Examples of successfully demonstrating study skills required for university study.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
- Demonstrable accurate record keeping.
- Engage with students and understand barriers experienced from disadvantaged and or diverse backgrounds.
- Demonstrate ability to organise your time effectively.
- A flexible approach to the working environment and working hours.
 
DESIRABLE:
 
- Demonstrate awareness of University of Northampton support systems, processes and communities that can effectively support students’ success.
- Experience of mentoring, influencing or supporting others to achieve their goals.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively to peers and members of staff.
- Ability to communicate using digital tools (apps, email)
 
 

Location
Waterside Campus

Additional information
This role begins in September 2026 and in expected to continue until May 2027. This rolel will require around 30 minutes of time commitment per week.
