Description

Role

We have a great opportunity for an ambitious University student specialising in AI or Data to join our team for a focused, high-impact development sprint!

The EIC is currently developing a suite of internally built AI tools (CustomGPTs and Chatbase agents) that support our work with our stakeholders and partners. We are now inviting a University student to join us in-person at our office in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, for a structured one-day AI development sprint.

The Energy Innovation Centre (“EIC”) was launched in 2008 to accelerate the discovery, development and deployment of innovation for the Energy industry to achieve net zero by 2050. At the EIC, we support the innovation ambitions of our industry partners from the gas, electricity and other utility sectors by helping them to discover new technologies that meet their challenges. We do this by constantly searching for new ideas from around the world that have the potential to be game-changing for energy consumers, the supply chain and the industry itself. Once we have identified these ideas and technologies, we help the people behind them to get access to the large energy companies and together help drive these innovations to the next stage of their development.

Duties and responsibilities

Summary of key requirements and skills for the role

  • Experience developing or refining AI tools / agents (e.g. prompt engineering, evaluation frameworks, structured output design, visual outputs).
  • Studying a degree in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science or a related discipline
  • Strong analytical thinking and ability to critically evaluate AI outputs
  • Excellent communication skills, particularly when explaining technical concepts to non-specialists
  • Pro-active, self-motivated with a focus on delivering practical outcomes within a short timeframe
  • Ability to justify recommendations clearly and logically

Skills and experience

Development Sprint Summary:

  • Work directly with the EIC team to develop and refine our “Feedback Quality Assessor” AI tool (CustomGPT / Chatbase), which assesses the quality of feedback provided by Network Partners to Innovators
  • Strengthen the structure, clarity, consistency and logic of the tool’s outputs to produce a polished, professional external AI tool
  • Apply and advise on best practice in AI tool design, refinement and evaluation
  • Upskill collaborators throughout the day by clearly explaining your reasoning, methodology and recommended workflow
  • Identify practical improvements that can be implemented immediately and provide structured recommendations for continued refinement
  • Conclude the day with a focused review of our existing AI tool, “Volta” (Innovator Support Specialist)
  • Provide prioritised, actionable recommendations to enhance Volta’s performance and reliability.

This placement is designed as a practical, real-world AI sprint. You will work on live tools that support external stakeholders and contribute directly to improving how AI is applied within the energy innovation ecosystem.
