Role

The post holder will provide operational support for the ODOS residential summer programme for 16–17-year-old students. Working within a clearly defined area of responsibility and following established procedures, the role supports group excursions, evening supervision, and routine welfare monitoring. The post holder will deliver a reliable, courteous service, communicate clearly with students and colleagues, and ensure that activities and processes are implemented accurately.

This role requires a consistent, reassuring presence during events and weekend evening hours, offering practical support, monitoring wellbeing, and helping facilitate planned activities under managerial guidance.

Working hours: Part-time role, up to 20 hours per week, including 19:30 – 22:30 on Saturday and Sunday, and other ad hoc shifts as agreedDuties and responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities

Student Supervision & Engagement

  • Be a visible and approachable presence both in student accommodation during weekend evening periods, and on excursions, offering general assistance and responding to routine enquiries. 
  • Encourage positive interaction among students through simple, age appropriate activities (e.g., quizzes, board games, film nights).
  • Accompany students on short pre-arranged local outings to shops or public spaces, ensuring they follow instructions and behave appropriately.
  • Use clear and supportive communication, particularly with students for whom English is not a first language.

Evening Check-In & Welfare Monitoring

  • Support the weekend evening check in process by accounting for students and reporting any non attendance according to established procedures. 
  • Observe and record straightforward wellbeing issues, escalating concerns following safeguarding guidance.
  • Maintain a calm, courteous presence and direct students to appropriate support if they present minor issues such as homesickness or low level disputes. 
  • Complete routine welfare logs and incident notes accurately.

Communication & Reporting

  • Share routine updates with the ODOS Project Team to support smooth delivery of evening activities.
  • Liaise courteously with accommodation, security, and administrative colleagues to exchange necessary information. 
  • Provide feedback on student engagement and activities

Skills and experience

Essential

  • Good customer service skills and an approachable manner. 
  • Current University of Leicester Student
  • Ability to analyse straightforward information and identify routine problems. 
  • Sociable, patient, and supportive when engaging with young people.
  • Ability to maintain composure and exercise good judgement in low level issues
  • Level 2/3 academic or vocational qualifications (e.g., NVQ 2/3, GCSE A–C, City & Guilds) or relevant work experience in a comparable environment.
  • Working knowledge of standard MS Office software.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in writing and verbally

Desirable

  • Experience of working with young people and/or international students
  • Experience in a higher education setting
  • Safeguarding awareness (note that training will be provided)

Additional information

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 because the appointee will have substantial access to young people and/or vulnerable adults. Therefore, an appointment to this post will be subject to checking through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). The successful applicant for this post will, therefore, be required to give consent for the University to check and obtain appropriate clearance with the DBS for the existence and content of any criminal record in the form of an Enhanced DBS check with Children's Barred List.

Information received from the DBS and the police will be kept in strict confidence and will be destroyed once the University is satisfied in this regard.
