Role
Our client is a UK insurance brokerage with an expanding in-house IT and development department. They design, build, and maintain our own policy management systems, data platforms, automation tools, and AI-assisted services that directly support underwriting, pricing, fraud detection, and operational efficiency.
You will work closely with their internal development team on business-critical systems, contributing to both ongoing enhancements and the development of new features. The role is hands-on and suited to someone comfortable working close to the codebase and databases, with responsibilities scaling based on experience and capability.
Alongside their core systems, the development team builds and maintains in-house RPA tooling used to automate interactions with third-party insurance platforms (via APIs and browser-driven automation) and internal operational workflows. The role also involves converting insurer rating rules and underwriting logic into coded rate engines, thereby transforming structured rating data into efficient and maintainable application logic.
Duties and responsibilities
- Develop and maintain PHP applications using object-oriented principles.
- Work within MVC-based frameworks and established internal architectures-
- Write, optimise, and maintain raw SQL queries and database structures-
- Contribute to new feature development across internal systems-
- Debug, refactor, and improve existing and legacy codebases-
- Assist with light front-end functionality using JavaScript and jQuery.
- Collaborate with other developers to deliver reliable, maintainable solutions
Exposure to AI & Automation Projects-
- Fraud prevention and detection tooling.
- Dynamic risk assessment systems.
- Automation and machine-learning-assisted workflows.
Skills and experience
- PHP (7+) with a solid understanding of object-oriented programming.
- Experience working with relational databases (MySQL or similar)
- Ability to write and understand SQL
- JavaScript and jQuery knowledge.
