Role

We are seeking enthusiastic and committed undergraduate students to join our Levelling Up: Computer Science outreach programme as Student Mentors.

Levelling Up: Computer Science is a national outreach programme led by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT that supports A-level students from underrepresented groups in developing the knowledge, confidence, and aspiration to progress into Computer Science degrees.

As a Student Mentor, you will play a key role in delivering interactive sessions, supporting learners, and acting as an approachable role model.

We particularly welcome applications from women and non-binary students, who are underrepresented in Computer Science.

A DBS check is required

Duties and responsibilities

  • Attend training sessions as required
  • Support the delivery of outreach sessions

                            Deliver subject material developed by the Department and BCS (training provided)

                            Facilitate small-group discussions and practical activities

                            Provide near-peer mentoring and guidance about studying Computer Science at university

                            Share your experiences of university life, assessment, and career pathways

                            Help create an inclusive, welcoming, and supportive learning environment

  • ·Assist with session preparation and evaluation activities
  • ·Contribute to reflective feedback to improve the programme

Skills and experience

Essential:

  • Current undergraduate student in the Department of Computer Science
  • Strong communication skills
  • Confidence explaining technical ideas clearly
  • Reliability and professionalism
  • Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion

Desirable:

  • Experience tutoring, mentoring, or outreach activities
  • Interest in education and widening participation
  • Experience supporting learners from diverse backgrounds
