Role

The Competency test centre are looking for support assistants to join the existing team on a temporary basis. 

• The post holder will provide flexible, technical and operational support in the OSCE simulated environments at the Competence Test Centre.

• The post holder will be working closely with Lead Clinical Assessors, Invigilators, the OSCE technician and exam administrative staff to coordinate the onsite preparation of daily exams and smooth delivery of the OSCE. 

• The CTC Support Assistant will be required to act as a patient during the delivery of the OSCE for limited stations. 

• They will work to set brief in each scenario.

Duties and responsibilities

• The post holder will provide flexible, technical and operational support in the OSCE simulated environments at the Competence Test Centre.

• The post holder will be working closely with Lead Clinical Assessors, Invigilators, the OSCE technician and exam administrative staff to coordinate the onsite preparation of daily exams and smooth delivery of the OSCE. 

• The CTC Support Assistant will be required to act as a patient during the delivery of the OSCE for limited stations. 

• They will work to set brief in each scenario.

• Working across the Invigilator and Clinical Assessor Teams, their work schedule with be dependent on needs of the service on any given day.

• Their time will be balanced between assisting the Invigilators and the Clinical Assessors in the delivery of the OSCE in a simulated clinical environment.

• They will support Invigilators in the provision of the opening brief to all candidates on arrival at the Test Centre when required.

• They will receive a handover from Lead Assessors which will indicate the specific requirement for role play of patients for the duration of the shift.

• They will support invigilators in checking candidate documentation, ensuring that all documents are completed, stored and are GDPR compliant in line with guidelines set out by the University of Northampton, and the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

• When working with or for the Invigilator they will ensure candidates have put their personal belongings in the designated lockers. Inform them that mobile phones are forbidden throughout the CTC floor and that they clearly display their ID badges.

• CTC Support Assistants will be trained as OSCE actors and coached to accurately and consistently recreate a patient’s history, personality, physical findings, and response pattern in the scenario. 

• They will read and understand set scripted scenarios which will be provided for each OSCE. 

• The CTC support Assistant is required to provide pastoral support to candidates whilst in the Test Centre and be always alert to the candidate’s well-being.

Deliver a high-quality candidate experience. 

Carry out supportive duties effectively as part of the role’s function. 

Ensure all employment legislative requirements are adhered to including equality and diversity and health and safety issues, GDPR.

Develop and maintain good relationships with colleagues, clinicians, employers and candidates undertaking the OSCE.

To maintain and develop acting skills by undertaking appropriate training and staff development to support high quality assessments.  

Skills and experience

GCSE grade A - C or equivalent in English, Maths or Level 2 Numeracy and Literacy

Demonstrate an understanding of test centre guidelines

Ability to communicate effectively with candidates, clinical / test centre staff and colleagues

Ability to adapt to organisational change and demands

Ability to adapt to technological advances in the workplace

Displays a caring and supportive attitude to candidates and staff

Additional information

Successful candidates will typically be expected to work 7.5 hours per day, normally starting at 8am and finishing by 3:30pm but if you are carrying out the invigilator side of the role you will need to start at 07:30am until 3pm. 

Successful candidates will need to have flexibility around hours and days.
