Role

The Library and Careers are looking to recruit a team of enthusiastic current University of Salford students to become our 2026/27 Library and Careers Skills Ambassadors.

The focus of the roles will be to raise awareness of the Library and Careers through pro-active engagement with current students, graduates and staff.  You will direct service users towards our range of Library and Careers support, such as workshops, e-learning and one-to-one appointments and events.

You will also be an initial point of contact for all visitors to the Careers Hub in the Lady Hale building, answering questions and dealing with queries from students, staff, alumni, and employers. You will also provide support during events such as Welcome, Careers Fairs and key events such as Start Up Schools for entrepreneurs.

As part of your role, you’ll develop a keen understanding of the Library and Careers offer and provide information to inspire others about getting started. You’ll provide a personable, relatable service for enquirers to understand what is on offer from Library and Careers.

  • You will be actively initiating conversations and engaging with students whilst roving and staffing campus wide stalls and events. This involves striking up conversation with students you don’t know, to tell them about our services and how we can support them. You will be required to meet student engagement targets on all your shifts.

  • Be part of our student voice and help us improve our services through focus groups and feedback activities, including collecting feedback on campus and sharing feedback forms with the wider student body.
  • Meeting student engagement targets set through the year.
  • Be responsible for staffing Careers Drop-Ins – providing students with information on Academic Skills, Digital Skills, Numeracy, Careers or Entrepreneurial topics (training will be provided for this).
  • Complete ad-hoc small tasks as and when required, these could include assisting with social media, printing, inputting data and preparing resources for a careers fair.

Skills and experience

  • You must be a current student in January 2027 at the University of Salford and must be available to work on any campus (Peel Park, Frederick Road, or Media City) throughout term-time.
  • You must be outgoing in your approach to the role – being able to spark up a conversation with anyone, including people you don’t know, to speak passionately about Library, Careers and Entrepreneurship.
  • You can show initiative and be able to solve problems proactively.
  • You must be organised, flexible and adaptive, with excellent time management skills, as this role will likely include a variety of tasks completed at different times and places.
  • You must be able to work well in team but also work well independently. There will be times when you are working closely alongside your teammates, but you may also be asked to work some shifts alone.
  • You must be an excellent communicator, with the ability to use active listening skills.

Our desirable criteria:

  • You have engaged with Library and Careers to understand our offer.
  • You have previous experience in a similar role, e.g. student ambassador, course representative, or similar.
