LJMU Student Futures team is seeking a motivated Student or recent LJMU Graduate to undertake a targeted research project evaluating the impact and effectiveness of the Discovery Internship Programme, which has supported paid, meaningful work experience opportunities for students over the past five years.

This role offers a rare opportunity to lead elements of a piece of research, influence an institutional programme, and gain high‑quality professional experience valued across research, policy, employability, and project roles.

The successful candidate will get the opportunity to work closely with the Student Futures Employer Engagement Team and Unitemps Team, alongside the head of Employer Employer Engagement.

Duties and responsibilities

The Research Assistant will work closely with the Employer Engagement Team to:

Research & Data Collection

  • Design and deliver surveys and interviews with students, graduates and employer hosts.
  • Conduct focus groups or 1:1 discussion as required.
  • Collect and analyse qualitative and quantitative data to explore programme outcomes.

Data Review & Analysis

  • Review historical programme data, documentation and past evaluation materials.
  • Identify trends in participation, inclusion, student development, and employer engagement.
  • Synthesise findings to support evidence-based recommendations.

Reporting & Presentation

  • Contribute to the drafting of a final evaluation report.
  • Develop visual summaries, slide decks, or briefing notes for internal stakeholders.
  • Support the submission or presentation of findings at the Students at the Heart Conference 2026, subject to acceptance.

Project Support

  • Work to agreed milestones and project deadlines.
  • Engage in regular supervision meetings.
  • Develop personal learning objectives and reflect on skills gained.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Current LJMU student or recent LJMU graduate.
  • Communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to analyse information and draw meaningful conclusions.
  • Organised, self-motivated, and able to work independently.
  • Interest in research, evaluation, employability, or student development.
  • Ability to handle confidential data responsibly.

 

Desirable

  • Experience in conducting surveys, interviews, or research projects (e.g., final-year dissertation).
  • Basic data analysis skills (Excel, SPSS, or similar).
  • Experience working with employers, university staff, or student-facing environments.
  • An interest in presenting findings or contributing to conferences.
