Description
Role
This is a 12-month, intercalated full-time paid year internship with WMG, delivered in partnership with the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, as part of the WMG Internship Programme. The role supports one of WMG’s flagship undergraduate engineering teams: Warwick Racing or Warwick Moto.
Based at the University of Warwick, you will play a central leadership role within Warwick Racing, supporting the full lifecycle of the Formula Student electric vehicle competition programme - from concept and design through to build, testing, and competition.
You will work closely with academic supervisors, technical staff, and a large multidisciplinary student team. You will act as the key link between staff and students, ensuring strong coordination, robust management structures, and alignment between academic (ES410) and extra-curricular activity.
This role is designed to allow a student to dedicate themselves full time for a complete intercalated year, maximising both learning and project impact. During the placement, you will complete the academic module ES2E1-120 Intercalated Year – Work Placement.
This is a highly valuable opportunity for students considering future careers in engineering, motorsport, automotive, electric vehicle development, project management, or technical leadership. By the end of the internship, you will have:
- Led a large, complex student engineering project over a full competition cycle
- Gained hands-on experience in electric vehicle design, build, testing, and competition
- Developed strong leadership, project management, and stakeholder engagement skills
- Worked closely with academic experts and industry partners
- Built confidence operating in a high-pressure, performance-driven environment
As part of the WMG Internship Programme, you will benefit from structured mentoring, technical guidance, and regular supervision to support both your professional development and academic success.
The role is primarily based on-site at WMG, University of Warwick, with travel required to attend the relevant competition event.
About the project / teams
Warwick Racing competes annually in the IMechE Formula Student competition, held in the UK each July. Warwick Racing design, build, and compete with high-performance electric vehicles, combining cutting-edge engineering with strong project management, documentation, and teamwork. WMG and the High Value Manufacturing Catapult are committed to providing the team with the best possible chance of success at the 2027 competition.
Duties and responsibilities
We are looking for a motivated, organised, and technically curious student with strong leadership potential to take on a pivotal role within one of the teams.
The role will evolve over the 12-month placement. You will begin with structured onboarding and familiarisation with the team, systems, and competition rules, progressing to a position of significant responsibility and leadership as the season develops.
As an Intercalated Year Intern, you will support and lead a wide range of activities across technical delivery, project management, team leadership, and external engagement.
Key responsibilities include:
- Acting as the primary link between academic staff, technical staff, and the wider student team
- Providing day-to-day leadership and coordination of the student team
- Supporting alignment between ES410 academic projects and extra-curricular team objectives
- Helping to establish and maintain robust management and governance structures
- Supporting vehicle design, development, build, and testing
- Ensuring progress against key milestones, including design freeze, build completion, and competition readiness
- Managing and controlling project scope to remain within the available budget
- Supporting preparation of high-quality competition documentation and paperwork
- Undertaking high-level discussions with sponsors and supporting fundraising activities
- Supporting departmental and university outreach, marketing, and engagement events
- Attending and supporting the team at the relevant competition event (UK or overseas)
Success in the role is defined by the delivery of a competition-ready vehicle, strong team performance, high-quality documentation, and a top 10 overall finish at the relevant competition (subject to external factors).
Throughout the internship, you will be encouraged to take ownership, demonstrate initiative, and grow into a confident technical and project leader.
Skills and experience
We are looking for a student who is enthusiastic about engineering, eager to learn, and motivated to take on responsibility within a demanding but rewarding environment. You must be available to work full time (36.5 hours per week) for the full 12-month intercalated year. Part-time working is not available for this role.
Essential:
- You must be eligible to undertake an intercalated year and complete the module ES2E1-120 Intercalated Year – Work Placement
- Studying an engineering or closely related STEM degree (e.g. mechanical, automotive, electrical, systems, manufacturing)
- Strong organisational and time management skills
- Project management skills/experience leading a project team
- Ability to work independently and as part of a large, multidisciplinary team
- Clear written and verbal communication skills
- Willingness to take on leadership and responsibility
- Interest in electric vehicles, motorsport, or applied engineering projects
- Confident using Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Ability to be based on-site at WMG, University of Warwick
- Willingness to travel and attend the relevant competition event (UK or overseas)
Desirable:
- Previous involvement in student engineering teams, Formula Student, MotoStudent, or similar projects
- Experience in project management, team coordination, or leadership roles
- Hands-on experience with vehicle design, build, testing, or systems integration
- Understanding of competition-based engineering environments
- Experience working with budgets, sponsors, or external stakeholders
