Description
Role
The Site Manager will have full responsibility for the safe, compliant, and efficient operations of a busy recycling and biomass site. This is a hands-on, operational role overseeing day-to-day activities, managing staff, coordinating heavy plant operations, and ensuring compliance with environmental permits, health & safety standards, and commercial targets.
The site operates 6–7 days per week and employs approximately ( up to) 15 staff, including plant operators, weighbridge staff, and yard operatives.
Duties and responsibilities
• Take full responsibility for the daily operation of the site, ensuring smooth, efficient, and safe running at all times.
• Manage wood recycling, biomass processing, aggregates, and green waste operations.
• Plan and coordinate workloads to meet production and throughput targets.
• Ensure effective use and maintenance of heavy plant equipment (shredders, loaders, excavators, crushers, etc.)• Oversee site housekeeping, traffic management, and material flow.
People Management:
• Lead, motivate and manage a team of approximately (up to) 15 employees.
• Allocate duties, manage rotas, and ensure adequate cover for a 6–7-day operation.
• Carry out inductions, toolbox talks, training, and performance management.• Promote a strong safety culture and positive working environment.
Health, Safety & Compliance
• Ensure full compliance with Health & Safety legislation and company policies.
• Maintain compliance with Environmental Permits and Waste Management regulations.
• Conduct risk assessments, method statements, and site audits.• Investigate incidents, near misses and implement corrective actions.• Liaise with regulators, auditors and external stakeholders as required.
Weighbridge & Administration:
• Oversee weighbridge operations, ensuring accurate recording of inbound and outbound materials.
• Ensure waste documentation, duty of care and compliance records are correctly maintained.
• Monitor site KPIs, tonnages, downtime, and operational performance.
• Report site performance, issues, and improvements to senior management.
Commercial & Continuous Improvement:
• Control site costs and contribute to improving operational efficiency.
• Identify opportunities for process improvements, increased recovery, and waste reduction.
• Support growth and development of the site in line with business objectives.
Skills and experience
• Proven experience managing an operational recycling, waste, biomass, or aggregates site
• Strong knowledge of Health & Safety and environmental compliance
• Experience managing teams and heavy plant operations.
• Confident decision-maker with a hands-on management style
• Good IT and administrative skills
Desirable:
• WAMITAB qualification (or working towards)
• Experience with wood recycling, biomass, or green waste processing
• Weighbridge management experience/ will have a weighbridge on site.
