Role
The Assessments Team, with the support of internal and external invigilators, are responsible for ensuring that the University’s centrally organised exams offer a calm and smooth experience for our students through efficiently organised and managed exam periods. As a member of the invigilation team you will be working to support the operational tasks during the exam periods and will be acting as a representative of the University in your interactions with students.
Duties and responsibilities
- supporting the senior invigilator with maintaining the confidentiality and secure storage of all exam papers and materials before, during and after the exams
- ensuring a calm environment is maintained throughout the exam to give students the best possible opportunity to succeed
- supporting students by helping them to find their seat, monitoring their behaviour and ensuring that they adhere to the regulations of examinations
- being vigilant, whilst not disrupting the candidates, in checking for any signs of potential exam misconduct and reporting any suspected misconduct to the senior invigilator
- reporting in the event of any discrepancy or irregularity in the progress of an examination directly to the senior invigilator
- at the end of examinations to help make sure that all answer booklets have been completed correctly and all exam paperwork and documentation is collected as per the instructions from the senior invigilator
- completing full and accurate attendance lists and undertake ID checks of all candidates
- work as a team to collect and count all exam scripts at the end of the examination, as instructed by the senior invigilator
- closely following the university’s guidelines for the whole duration of the exam
- ensuring that you are familiar with the location of the nearest fire exits and the evacuation procedure
- ensuring that the appropriate procedure is followed should a student become unwell or distressed during the exam
Skills and experience
Key requirements:
- The role can be physically demanding
- The ability to deal with difficult or urgent situations and make informed decisions
- IT literate
An exam invigilator needs to be:
- confident and able to effectively communicate with staff and students, including clear verbal communication
- team players, with the ability to work on one’s own initiative
- able to carry out core duties without supervision and/or as instructed by the senior invigilator
- able to appropriately handle the confidential nature of these activities
- able to deal sensitively with difficult situations and confident in knowing when to escalate to the senior invigilator
- able to manage/direct large groups of people
- able to work in an organised and structured way
- able to seek help where appropriate
- IT confident and able to support IT and computer-based exams
- a reliable, dependable and punctual team member
- committed to a fair exam experience for all our students, ensuring that rules and procedures are applied fairly and consistently
- able to demonstrate a sensitive approach to individual students to meet their needs as appropriate
