Beat Modules is an award-winning Liverpool-based digital health education start up transforming PSHE (Personal, Social, and Health Education) through gamified learning. We work with secondary schools across Liverpool and Merseyside to deliver engaging, evidence-based sessions on vaping prevention, mental health, and positive masculinity.
Since launching in 2025,we've reached 650+ students across 7 schools with 96% student recommendation rates and measurable behaviour change outcomes. The Role:
We're seeking a creative, technically capable student to help evolve our educational gaming platform. You'll work at the intersection of UI/UX design, front-end development, and educational game design to enhance the visual quality and engagement of our learning platform.
Duties and responsibilities
Main Duties:
1. UI/UX Enhancement:
- Audit existing platform interface (video feeds, quiz flows, leaderboards, badges)
- Design and implement improvements to layout, spacing, colour schemes, and iconography
- Enhance visual consistency across platform components
- Improve transitions, animations, hover states, and responsive behaviour
- Create modern, youth-friendly UI components that increase student engagement
- Review and enhance current mini-game assets and visual design
- Prototype new game concepts focused on health education objectives
- Improve gamification elements (scoring, feedback, progression mechanics)
- Create simple asset upgrades (graphics, effects, UI elements)Test games with real user feedback from pilot schools
- Work alongside a Senior Software Developer on the production codebase
- Learn professional front-end workflows (Git, component architecture, code review)
- Participate in weekly team meetings and sprint planning
- Document design decisions and implementation approaches
Skills and experience
Essential:
- Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
- Ability to implement UI changes and debug basic code issues
- Comfortable using development tools (VS Code, browser dev tools)
- Understanding of responsive design principles
UI/UX Design Thinking (Key Skill 2)
- Strong visual design instincts (layout, colour theory, typography)Understanding of user-centered design principles
- Ability to critique interfaces and propose improvements
- Experience with design tools (Figma, Adobe XD, or similar - even basic)
Game Design Awareness (Key Skill 3)
- Interest in gamification and educational game mechanics
- Understanding of feedback loops, progression systems, and player motivation
- Familiarity with browser-based games or simple game engines
- Creative problem-solving for interactive learning experiences
Desirable Skills:
- Experience with simple game frameworks (Phaser.js, Kaboom.js, or similar)
- Understanding of accessibility in digital design
- Knowledge of educational psychology or behaviour change principles
- Portfolio demonstrating UI work, game prototypes, or interactive projects
- Version control basics (Git/GitHub)
