Role

WBS Teaching & Learning Enhancement are seeking applicants interested in technology enhanced learning, digital publishing and multimedia creation to join our publishing team, working with academics and support staff across the School to create high-quality online study materials for a range of courses.

You will be responsible for editing, formatting and proofreading written and multimedia study materials for WBS courses. You will also work directly with academics, supporting live online lectures to students across the globe and handling student queries.

You will be working on a variety of tasks across multiple projects with differing deadlines so it is vital that you can manage concurrent tasks effectively and keep an accurate record of progress. As a key member of the team, you will need to combine good technical skills with effective teamwork, excellent communication skills and an awareness of good customer service. You should be confident in communicating with a range of audiences, including students and academics.

Please note: this role will involve regular evening working.

Duties and responsibilities

1. In line with defined timeframes, publish high-quality online course materials for the full range of WBS courses. This includes formatting, editing and proofreading text online (using my.wbs and MS Office) and sourcing copyright for graphics.

2. Use the appropriate house style to edit and format study materials, ensuring a consistent standard throughout.

3. Support academics in recording screencasts and then editing them to produce high-quality videos for use in multimedia study materials (using TechSmith Camtasia).

4. Produce and proofread subtitles and transcripts for video and audio content using Otter, ensuring accuracy throughout.

5. Monitor the shared inbox, ensuring all emails are appropriately tagged, forwarded or responded to in-line with established guidance.

6. Provide technical support to academics, administrative staff and students during the delivery of live interactive online lectures to students (using Kaltura).

7. Monitor online student forums, responding promptly to queries relating to study materials, and updating content as required.

8. Liaise with both academic authors and student support staff to resolve queries and ensure timely delivery of materials.

9. With direction from the line manager, liaise with suppliers about the availability and purchase of external study resources (using online purchasing system) for inclusion in the module materials.

10. Keep a record of the progress of study materials and notify line manager of queries or issues (e.g., potential delays or possible copyright issues).

Skills and experience

Essential

  • A good standard of education, including GCSEs at A-C (or equivalent) in Mathematics and English
  • Excellent current IT skills with the capacity to master new systems quickly
  • Evidence of working to a high level of accuracy and with meticulous attention to detail
  • Good proofreading skills
  • Ability to work to deadlines and to progress concurrent tasks effectively
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills through a range of relevant channels (e.g. face to face, email, Teams)
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team
  • Understanding of the importance and function of house styles
  • Customer service experience, both face-to-face and in writing
  • Substantial general office experience
  • Experience of maintaining accurate records using a computer-based log

Desirable

  • A degree in English or a related subject
  • Experience in the creation of multimedia learning resources
  • Experience of using desktop publishing
  • Experience of working in a publishing environment
  • Experience of creating web pages and editing HTML
