Description

Role

Reporting to the Principal Investigator, Dr Jamelia Harris. We are seeking a Research Assistant to support an innovative research project which links colonial legacies and the contemporary labour market in the English-speaking Caribbean. The project will investigate how the institutions, laws (written/unwritten) and general structures of governance in the colonial period in the English-speaking Caribbean can still shape present day institutions like the labour market.

The successful candidate will work on the quantitative component of the project and analyse a sample of census data and survey data specific to the labour market in four Caribbean countries – Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. 

Duties and responsibilities

• Manage, prepare and present quantitative datasets from IPUMS international and selected survey data

• Prepare descriptive statistics and create data visualisations

• Conduct statistical analysis (including regression analysis) to examine labour market outcomes across different groups

• Document research procedures and maintain organised research records

• With the PI, draft a summary report detailing the main findings

• Contribute to regular project team meetings and discussions

Skills and experience

Essential

• Master's level qualification in Economics, other quantitative Social Sciences or equivalent research experience

• Strong quantitative research skills with proficiency in statistical software e.g. Stata

• Experience handling large-scale survey datasets

• Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research environment

• Excellent organisational skills with ability to meet research deadlines

• Strong written and verbal communication skills

Desirable 

• Knowledge of Caribbean labour markets and institutional frameworks (desirable) 

• Familiarity with research on occupational outcomes/sorting across occupations (desirable)

Location
Mainly remote, with occasional face-to-face meeting if necessary
