Based in the Energy & Environmental Management Team, the intern will be required to provide two evaluation reports for the 1styear operations of two domestic energy/ climate change projects. This will require working with internal teams and external stakeholders to gather and analyse both qualitative and quantitative data to form the basis of a final report.
Sefton Climate & Retrofit Action Project Also known as ‘SCRAP’, this five-year project has been awarded funding from the National Lottery’s Climate Action Fund (CAF)and aims to break down the barriers preventing our community actively participating in climate action.
The project will be reaching the end of year 1 in April 2026, and the intern would be evaluating the period April 2025- April 2026. This project aims to support the community in achieving warmer, healthier and energy efficient homes. This may be done with increased installation of energy saving and retrofit measures in homes reducing fuel poverty levels and CO2 emissions. We are also promoting ‘green’ jobs within the area.
The SCRAP team are promoting climate action with a range of community groups and the general public in Sefton, with particular focus on fuel poverty energy saving domestic retrofit green jobs green transport. The programme is open to everyone in Sefton, however, particular groups being targeted are those that need the most support to engage with climate action and in turn are most likely to be negatively affected by climate related issues; Low income & unemployed Youth Elderly Disabled and Carers Energy inefficient homes.
By the end of the project we are aim to have:
- Knowledgeable, empowered and proactive communities.
- Established community energy groups. Increased awareness of green jobs and raining opportunities.
- Warmer, healthier and more energy efficient homes through the increase of retrofit measures.
- Increased income to homeowners through lower bills or having energy efficient measures in place.

Duties and responsibilities
The evaluation reports required will focus on a review of the KPIs (Key performance Indicators) set out in the project plans. Sefton Council staff will provide access to data collected across the first year and support with evaluation report templates and access to both information and people needed to complete the reports.
- The position will be largely desk-based activities with some travel to see work carried out across the Sefton area.
- There will bed at a analysis, interpretation of data & feedback, interviews of key staff and partners, report writing and effective presentation of results and recommendations.
Full support will be provided by the two team principles leading on the projects. The internship will provide an insight into working for a local authority and the types of work carried out which may not fit the usual stereotypes. It will provide experience of working in a professional, office environment, and give them a real insight into the world of work once they graduate.
- They will work with staff within other departments, making links that may help them in their future career.
- The intern may also be asked to complete some online training to ensure they are aware of key issues such as data protection and safeguarding, which are critically important to public organisations.
Skills and experience
Essential:
- Research skills: you will be expected to understand the principles of using credible and wide-ranging information sources in a systematic way. collecting data and analysis and interpretation of that data/information.
- Data analysis skills: you will need to look at the outcomes of two projects and assess these against the aims of the projects generally. This will include use of spreadsheets and accessing databases.
- Communication skills: You will need to speak to staff working on the projects and partners. You may be asked to attend meetings, events or to present findings to small groups of staff.
- Written / report writing skills: the internship requires you to submit reports at the end of your placement to evaluate the two projects.
- Interpersonal skills: you will be expected to effectively communicate with members of the team and other partners.
