Description
Role
The University of Salford Library’s Learning and Skills Team is looking for postgraduate researchers from any discipline to join us as Writing Mentors to help create, deliver, and review a new writing support service for students.
We’re looking for motivated mentors who understand the different challenges of writing at university level and can help shape the service into a current, relevant, and holistic service that develops students as successful and reflective writers.
We will provide training and scaffolded supervision, whilst giving you opportunities to exercise autonomy, be creative, and co-develop the service with us. You will also be able to develop your pedagogical skills and enhance your knowledge of inclusive practice and service innovation.
As we are piloting this new model for writing support, you would work 4 hours per week for an initial 12-week period from early March to late May, including one week of mandatory paid training in the week commencing 2 March.
However, there is potential for the pilot and opportunity to be extended beyond May, and for some flexibility to be built into your weekly working schedule throughout. The pay is £18.01/hour.
Duties and responsibilities
- Deliver writing support in various formats, which may include 1-1 consultations, facilitated group sessions, and collaborative writing activities.
- Review the existing writing provision and help co-create new materials and resources.
- Support students to identify the nature of their writing challenges and develop their own strategies to overcome them.
- Research and share best practices in inclusive writing support.
- Help analyse and understand current student needs.
Skills and experience
- Ability to self-reflect about your own process of writing and its challenges.
- Ability to listen actively and respond to student needs.
- Strong command of written academic English and ability to write in different forms (e.g. essay, reflective piece, report).
- Strong written and verbal communication, including the ability to ask questions and facilitate discussion.
- Ability to run sessions effectively.
- Awareness of the potential barriers students might face in writing (e.g. affective, cognitive, cultural, socioeconomic).
- Ability to work well in a team.
- Ability to analyse, synthesise, and present information clearly.
- A genuine desire to help students develop as writers.
- Confidence with digital tools and willingness to learn new tools to support writing and online delivery.
Desirable
- Previous teaching or peer-mentoring experience.
- Prior knowledge of inclusive pedagogy, accessibility, and neurodiversity.
- Familiarity with the debates around the use of GenAI in writing.
