Role
*Ringfenced to LJMU doctorate/Phd or post-doctoral students only*
The School of Nursing and Advanced Practice at Liverpool John Moores University is leading sector innovation through the development of the Neighbour H.U.B.© placement; a pioneering, community‑focused learning experience designed to prepare future healthcare professionals for the evolving landscape of health and social care. In line with national priorities outlined in the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan (2023) and the 10-Year Health Plan for England (2025), this placement equips students with the broader, person-centred skills needed to deliver integrated, personalised care across community settings.
The Neighbour H.U.B.© model is adopting innovative learning approaches into practice education to help health and socail care students navigate the complexity, uncertainty and relational dynamics inherent in modern health and social care environments.
To support the continued development and sector-wide scalability of this initiative, we are seeking to appoint a Uni-temps Student Evaluator to undertake a comprehensive evaluation of a two‑week pilot. The successful candidate will play a key role in generating robust evidence about the placement’s impact, effectiveness and future potential.
Duties and responsibilities
We are seeking a Uni-Temps Research Assistant to support the development and evaluation of the innovative Neighbour H.U.B.© community-based placement model within the School of Nursing and Advanced Practice. Working with academic leads, the postholder will contribute to a scoping review of community, arts-integrated, population-health education models by developing search strategies, screening literature, extracting and synthesising data, appraising study quality, and supporting manuscript preparation and ethical approval documentation.
The role will also assist with a sequential mixed-methods evaluation of the Neighbour H.U.B.© pilot. This includes helping to recruit participants, conducting interviews and focus groups with students and community stakeholders, undertaking transcription, and contributing to qualitative and quantitative data analysis to assess the model's impact, reach, cost-efficiency, and scalability.
Skills and experience
The successful candidate will have strong research skills, including the ability to design and implement database search strategies, apply inclusion and exclusion criteria, and extract and synthesise data using structured frameworks. They should be confident critically appraising research using recognised tools, producing clear academic summaries, and contributing to manuscript development. Knowledge of ethical research processes and institutional governance is essential, along with the ability to design surveys or questionnaires and support basic quantitative data analysis.
They will also bring skills in qualitative research, including recruiting participants ethically, conducting interviews, managing consent, and accurately transcribing and handling confidential data. Competence in qualitative data analysis—such as thematic coding, ideally with NVivo or similar software—is required. Desirable additional skills include experience working in academic research settings, involvement in community or arts‑based health projects, familiarity with population‑health approaches, and the ability to work effectively within interdisciplinary teams.
