Description
Role
You will be based in the School of Sciences, Psychology, Arts and Humanities, Computing, Engineering, and Sport (SPACES) and work with Joanna Miest-Bray, who is an Aquatic Animal Physiologist. You will join her work on oyster immunity and climate change effects. In your role you will be responsible to take care of the oysters, support experiments, sampling and analysis.
Duties and responsibilities
Animal husbandry and experimental support:
- Independent oyster husbandry (water testing, feeding, water changes) after training
- Preparation of experiments (setting up tanks) together with supervisor
- Check on experiments and report to supervisor
- Support oyster dissection
Molecular work:
- Research relevant genes and design primers after training.
- PCR
- Support preparation of molecular samples
- Detailed keeping of a lab book
Skills and experience
- For this role you have to be reliable and pay attention to detail.
- You have to be confident to work independently after training.
- You will need to communicate with the supervisor regularly and keep detailed notes of your work.
- Prior knowledge in oyster biology is not necessary but you should be interested in biology and have a fundamental knowledge of animals.
All training will be provided.
