Role
Primary Duty: The Maths Invigilator and Exams Admin Assistant will be responsible for invigilating examinations primarily within the Maths Institute but may also be required to invigilate in the main exam halls. Invigilation will be carried out in line with the invigilator’s handbook and relevant university and departmental policies.
Secondary Duty: Maths Invigilators may also be required to assist the Taught Programmes Office with exam script administration duties, including preparing exam scripts for marking and carrying out accuracy checks after scripts have been marked, and tracking student attendance.
Please note that current Undergraduate and Postgraduate Taught students are unfortunately not eligible for this post. First year PhD students undertaking taught modules will not be allowed to invigilate exams for modules they have taken.
Duties and responsibilities
It is the responsibility of the Maths Invigilator and Exams Admin Assistant to ensure:
- Examinations are conducted in compliance with the regulations agreed by the Senate.
- The security of the examination papers and materials.
- All students receive a consistent experience for their examinations.
- Compliance with the processes and practices set out in the Guidance for Invigilators and/or by the department.
- Students’ reasonable adjustments are accurately and sensitively applied during exam sessions.
- Relevant paperwork is accurately completed and returned.
- Administrative exams tasks are completed in a timely manner and with attention to detail.
Invigilation in the Maths Institute will be for approx. 1-20 students per room with additional support based in the same building.
Invigilation in the main hall will normally be for a large number of students, directed by a Senior Invigilator and working alongside other support invigilators.
Skills and experience
Essential Criteria:
- The Maths Invigilator and Exams Admin Assistant will be required to be (or to become) familiar with the invigilation requirements as set out by the Exams Office and the Maths Institute, including reading in full the invigilators handbook which will be provided electronically.
- Educated to GCSE/O level standard, or equivalent, in English and Mathematics.
- Ability to work with attention to detail and accuracy.
- A general level of disability awareness, and the ability to act with tact and sensitivity, in order to effectively support students with reasonable adjustments.
- Strong team working and communication skills.
Desirable Criteria:
- Previous experience of invigilation, and of administration would be beneficial.
All necessary and appropriate training and information will be provided.
