We are looking for an experienced candidate to provide practical technical advice and support to students, specialising in music composition, sound design and audio production for screen-based and visual media projects. The role supports teaching and learning by helping students plan, create, record and edit high-quality original audio and music for their work.

Based mainly in the Vijay Patel Building, the post holder will support students with soundtrack composition, sound effects, dialogue and voiceover recording, editing and post-production. The role also includes delivering short workshops on core audio skills and the safe, effective use of basic field-recording equipment.

Applicants should have hands-on experience composing music for visual media, strong technical knowledge of audio production, and the ability to explain concepts clearly to students with a wide range of experience levels.

The role will start as soon as possible with an expected end date of 03/07/2026. You will work 37 hours per week on campus.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Support students with all aspects of audio production, including original music composition, sound effects, dialogue and voiceover recording, editing and basic post-production

  • Provide creative and technical guidance on composing music that supports narrative, mood and pacing for film and visual media projects

  • Offer hands-on support and advice on audio software, hardware and recording equipment used across the Vijay Patel Building, Queen’s Building and associated teaching spaces

  • Deliver workshop-style sessions for students from predominantly visual disciplines, introducing core audio and music-for-picture principles

  • Teach fundamental skills including basic composition techniques, sound design concepts, microphone choice and placement, and field recording methods

  • Support students in the safe and effective use of field recording equipment for location sound capture, promoting good practice and health and safety awareness

  • Assist with student inductions and provide technical instruction on music and audio facilities, equipment and workflows

  • Maintain, prepare and care for audio and music production equipment to ensure teaching and learning activities run smoothly with minimal disruption

  • Keep up to date with current industry practices, tools and workflows in music composition, sound design and audio production

  • Share technical knowledge within the technical team, including documenting procedures and guidance where required

  • Assist in delivering agreed service levels for technical instruction and student support

  • Support learning activities such as workshops, demonstrations, exhibitions and student showcases involving music and audio

  • Contribute to blended and remote learning through the development or maintenance of online technical resources

  • Maintain responsibility for health and safety, ensure compliance with University policies, and promote equality, diversity and inclusion in line with the Equality Act 2010

  • Undertake other duties appropriate to the role as required

Skills and experience

Essential

  • Practical experience of composing original music for visual media, such as film, animation, games or digital content.
  • Practical experience of sound design and audio production in an educational, creative or professional environment.
  • Working knowledge of digital audio workstations and music composition workflows.
  • Experience using microphones and portable recording equipment for voice, dialogue and environmental sound capture.
  • Ability to explain creative and technical concepts clearly to students with little or no audio or music background.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple student support requests.
  • Awareness of health and safety considerations relating to audio equipment and studio or location recording.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a student-focused approach to support.

Desirable

  • Experience supporting audio and music for film, animation, games or other visual media projects within higher education.
  • Experience delivering short workshops or practical demonstrations.
  • Familiarity with sound libraries, synthesis, MIDI-based composition or hybrid scoring workflows.
  • Experience working within a university or similar learning environment.
