Role
The University of Edinburgh’s Information Services Group (ISG) are hiring three undergraduate students to work this summer as Project Management Interns. The key purpose of this role is to manage a small university project, supporting a range of project management activities across the Project Services team. Some examples of previous intern projects include creating a toolkit for process mapping, collating information about available training resources for Project Services staff, documenting risk management procedures, and creating a directory of key contacts for Project Services.

Within this role, you will gain practical experience in managing a small project, creating a project plan, liaising with stakeholders, and identifying and managing risks and issues. You will join the Project Services team, who are responsible for the successful delivery of projects across the University. The team are experienced in project management, programme management, portfolio management, and business analysis.

You can expect to start work on the 1st June 2026 and work until the 21st August 2026. You will work between a minimum of 28 to a maximum of 35 hours per week (Monday to Friday) in a hybrid working pattern split between working from home (commutable distance from Edinburgh), and in Forrest Hill. You will be required to attend the office a minimum of two days per week. Your preference on working hours within the above range can be discussed during the interview stage. You will be paid £13.55 per hour, plus £2.45 per hour holiday pay. Payment is one month in arrears, meaning your first payment date (should this position start when expected) will be 28th July 2026.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Managing a small project and undertaking all tasks assigned to a project manager, including creating a project plan, identifying stakeholders, directing resources on tasks, and identifying and managing risks and issues;
  • Undertaking business analysis research, documenting processes, interviewing staff involved in a business process, and investigating possible improvements to a business process;
  • Supporting the Project Services teams by preparing information for meetings, attending meetings, taking notes, recording and following up on actions;
  • Supporting the Project Management Office services and tools by maintaining project and team records, documenting and updating guidance, developing communication material, providing project tools support, and assisting with the production of management information and monthly reporting;
  • Participating in project activities such as requirement gathering workshops, user and acceptance testing, or dissemination.

Skills and experience

Essential criteria:

  • A current University of Edinburgh undergraduate student (you must be a matriculated student for the duration of your employment). Internships are open to all undergraduate students, except those in their final year of study;
  • Based in the UK for the duration of the work, within commutable distance of Edinburgh, and able to work on campus (we cannot accommodate individuals working overseas due to tax and legal implications), and able to attend a Right to Work Check in person if needed;
  • Evidence of excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Proven good time management, with an ability to work effectively in a hybrid environment, and be self-motivated;
  • Evidence of good analytical and organisational skills;
  • Proven familiarity with the MS Office Suite Package (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint);
  • Demonstrable experience of working successfully in a team.

Desirable criteria:

  • Background knowledge of project management processes, methods, or skills, through studies or work experience.

Location
Hybrid, split between working from home and in 5 Forrest Hill (EH1 2QL).
