Role
The University of Edinburgh’s Information Services Group (ISG) are hiring an undergraduate student to work this summer as an AI Application Review Intern. The key purpose of this role is to research and evaluate code that has been provided, which will enable an AI Application (ELM) to listen to interviews involving more than one person and transcribe them successfully with effective labels.
Within this role, you will gain practical experience in researching code and using programming tools such as Python and Java to improve an active AI application. You will join the ELM team, who are responsible for building, maintaining, and growing the GenAI ELM service to both the University community and external clients. They are continually seeking to improve features and offerings within the ELM product.
You can expect to start work on the 1st June 2026 and work until the 21st August 2026. You will work between a minimum of 20 to a maximum of 35 hours per week (Monday to Friday) in a hybrid working pattern split between working from home (commutable distance from Edinburgh) and in Forrest Hill. You will be required to attend the office at least one day per week. Your preference on working hours within the above range can be discussed during the interview stage. You will be paid £14.30 per hour, plus £2.59 per hour holiday pay. Payment is one month in arrears, meaning your first payment date (should this position start when expected) will be 28th July 2026.

Duties and responsibilities
- Researching the code and functionality of an AI application that takes in an audio file and builds an intelligent transcript of multiple people talking (e.g. interviews);
- Testing the code against test audio files to confirm it works effectively, finding edge cases, and offering guidance on how best to use this application;
- Researching and testing how best to integrate this application’s code (and functionality) into ELM;
- Building a prototype of this new tool working directly within ELM.
Skills and experience
Essential criteria:
- A current University of Edinburgh undergraduate student (you must be a matriculated student for the duration of your employment). Internships are open to all undergraduate students, except those in their final year of study;
- Based in the UK for the duration of the work, within commutable distance of Edinburgh, and able to work on campus (we cannot accommodate individuals working overseas due to tax and legal implications), and able to attend a Right to Work Check in person if needed;
- You must be able to attend an in-person interview on campus on the 24th March 2026;
- Proven experience in programming (Python and Java);
- Demonstrable experience in conducting research, especially when involving technology (e.g. studies, past employment, personal projects);
- Experience working with current Gen AI tools (ELM, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, etc.);
- Demonstrable excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Proven ability to manage your own time effectively, and an ability to coordinate your own activities and workload.
- Experience working with the Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. PowerPoint, Word, etc.).
